This sampler truly is a sampler in that it runs all over the place in its musical styles. I think it is mis-categorized in the "Rock/General" category as more than half of it is not what I'd call general rock. There is some good music on this sampler but some of the songs are what we used to call "metal" when I was younger. Lyrically and vocally a good portion of the tracks are questionable, leaving me to wonder just what it is that Victory is looking for in a band. Since the vocals are a key part of the music to me, I simply had to dump some of the songs. I ended up dumping tracks 3, 6, 11 and 12 as they were just too far out of my tolerance range.
My tastes tend toward more classic rock and melodic rock styles, which may or may not assit in determining if anyone else's opinion will mimic my own. A minor word of warning: if you care about such things, track 10 has several f-bombs dropped for no apparent reason (in other words, unnecessary). This doesn't bother me so much except for the fact that my young children listen to my Zune and so I have to monitor that. If you have a similar situation, this is an FYI. For the price (free), it's worth a download and listen for most of the tracks on this sampler.

There's some decent stuff here if you skip over horrible, horrible formulaic emo (lookin' at you, Hawthorne Heights).
The good is good, the bad is bad, and in the end it all balances out to a mediocre three stars. But it's a free sampler, so it's hard to complain too much--trash the stuff you don't like and keep the rest.

Best Free Sampler.,

I've downloaded at least 8 of these free tracks. This is by far the best Amazon Sampler ever to hit the MP3 store!

I liked getting Hawthorne Heights, Silverstein, and Aiden free. Most of the other stuff was... ok, I guess, if you like that kind of thing (screamo emo) which I don't. I was pleasantly surprised by Between the Buried and Me and Bayside, both of which were pretty good.
Just a warning- track 10 (Beautiful Loser) has a bunch of f-bombs, most of which seemed really unnecessary. I'm not a prude. I'm fine with cussing. But if that's the only word you use, and you use it over and over and over, that just screams "I have a small vocabulary! Pay attention to my desperate grasp at writing decent lyrics!" If you like screaming, pounding drums, and clanging guitars (did they break a string?) then you'll like most of this. Personally, I prefer music that sounds like music, (as in actual notes, not just noise.) Silly me. Why would I want to be able to sing along- or even understand the lyrics? I'll probably get some furious comments about what a shallow, musically-illiterate person I am. Too bad.

Hey! I liked Somewhere in Between by Hawthorn Heights. In fact, other than Kicking and Screaming, it was about the only song I DID like on this album. Way too metallic for my taste. But obviously someone liked it.

I agree with the other reviewers that believed this was the best sampler Amazon has cranked out. Maybe not for everybody, but when you're into an interesting blend of Pop Punk (Hawthorne Heights), some heavier stuff (Between the Buried and Me, Bury Your Dead), and some straight-up quirky stuff (Streetlight Manifesto), this is some good stuff. All 14 tracks are worth a listen, and this sampler did exactly what a sampler is supposed to -- get you interested in bands you've never heard of. After listening through this, I looked up over half of these bands and bought at least one album as a result.
It's Free. It's Great. It's an Amazon Sampler.

This one isn't all that great either. But, Funeral for a Friend, Aiden, Bayside and Hawthorne Heights are kind of interesting. The rest, not so much.

if you want the hawthorne heights and funeral for a friend for free, you have to download the entire sampler. there are other good bands on here. i've been a fan of darkest hour for a while, but i'm still surprised victory is putting out so much, well, crap.

Too many dilettantes reviewing good disks......,

I've read reviews of a bunch of contemporary rock albums and decided to draw the line here. I downloaded 'Sister Sin' as a most likely loser metal tune based on the name...and I thought it was GREAT.
Look, I've been in this game since I was a DJ when Led Zeppelin was new, so I've seen it all. You know, some people hated Zeppelin when they first came out. Go for it...lots of tunes on this disk rock, for free or for $14.95! Don't listen to the spoiled dilettantes: you may find something that makes it worth buying somebody's album, maybe even become a fan! |
