Victory at Sea, This is the DVD to have,
By
This review is from: Victory at Sea (DVD)
This is the DVD release of this outstanding series that I have been waiting for. The History Channel version is a total flop, don't waste your money on it. When I bought this on Amazon, I was thinking that this was going to be another "flop", but that didn't happen. The narration by Leonard Graves and the music by Richard Rodgers are at the absolutey correct levels that they should be, just as in the original VHS series. The sound quality is excellent as is the video imagery. You get the lead-in theme song and the big "V" at the end of each episode, no overlapping segue as in the VHS tapes which eliminated the leadin/endings for all episodes on a given tape in the series. There is also some added bonus materials on each DVD disc which adds to the appeal of this series. All I can say is WELL DONE, FINALLY! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this version of Victory at Sea if you want the original un-edited un-corrupted TV series on DVD.

Thanks to Mr. Phillips review, I sent for this DVD - I was not disappointed. It's the one to get. This landmark documentary is presented in it's entirety with good sound and as good a picture quality as the souce material allows. And at this price - it's a steal! GRAB IT. Anyone interested in the history of the conflict of World War Two will find this incredible series invaluable. The score by Richard Rogers is stunning. At this incerdible price you can't go wrong. A treasure!

I remember watching most of this series when it was broadcast the first time. This collection has the same impact on me today as it did then. The 26-minute episodes are perfect for something to watch when I have a few minutes. While they have not been digitally remastered, the quality is pretty good for 50 year-old film. I actually like the nostalgic look of the old film and the sound is just like I remember it on the 1952 Zenith B&W TV. Very enjoyable so far and absolutely no technical issues with the collection.

There are many versions of Victory at Sea, and most of these seem to have fatal flaws that would prevent enjoyment. I can say that this version is EXCELLENT. While they didn't remove every flaw, it looks a lot more natural. The pics of the world as it was then somehow look cleaner, more vivid than today's polluted landscapes- maybe because it's B&W? For whatever reason, it's different, much more interesing, and the announcing and music are faultless. Sure, it could be considered propaganda but it was 'the good war', certainly the 'best' the US ever saw.
The guy who said he was missing episodes almost certainly got a pirated set: mine has all the episodes plus extras. I can't recommend this enough: you get a lengthy series with all the feeling of those long-lost days when heroes DID exist, when patriotism had meaning... it makes today's 'leaders' look truly puny by comparison. We fought, and ended it as quickly as possible, and the goal was peace. The contrast is so strong it can make you weep over what we have lost. Don't miss this one!

Every American Should See This,

I had not seen this in many years, but this is something that all Americans should see to remind them of what can happen if or when we cease to understand the dangers to our country that exist today. While watching these 26 episodes, I was reminded of how we, the American people, co-operated with one another to ultimately defeat the enemy during World War II. In those days, it mattered little whether you were a Democrat or a Republican, we ALL pulled together to achieve a common goal--VICTORY!!

Victory at Sea,

Received this Victory at Sea DVD quickly from Amazon and popped it into my playback unit. The Richard Rogers-scored theme music and all the black and white videos of the awesome effort that went into winning WWII took me back to my high school days when I watched the original series on TV. The product obviously has been transferred from original 35mm films, but the quality of the picture and sound is quite good. Definitely worth the cost of the purchase, just for the historical value. Good to help explain to kids these days the heritage of our nation, and what their forebears thought was important to fight for, in a campaign that took this major logistical effort.

This is an unbelievable deal at this price. You get two DVDs just as seen on TV. I was blownaway at the good quality. Perfect. And watching them I realized why my career has been with the Navy.

This is the one. This set of three disc includes all 26 episodes of this ground breaking historical documentary. It is a very good transfer of the original TV programs to DVD. Picture and sound are excellent. It has the original Richard Rogers music score which has been widely acclaimed. I watched the series when it was on TV in reruns. This collection is a must for those interested in history and particularly naval history.

Count The Number of Episodes!,

There are clearly supposed to be 26 episodes on the three DVD's. By the time I completed the series, it was obvious that there were only 4 episodes on each of the 3 DVD's, and I didn't get to them till 10 days after my Return Availability expired! My 3 DVD's have a total of 12 episodes, out of the 26 indicated. Therefore, I received less than 50% of what I paid for. Immediately upon receipt, put each DVD in your player and see how many episodes that you have received!

Classic WWII History,

This review is from: Victory at Sea (DVD)
This is the WWII classic history with great music by Richard Rodgers. The video and narration emphasizes America's great victories but minimizes some of the failures of the US and its allies which results in a very patriotic presentation but lacks a full understanding of the events covered. Some of the video and sound is poor even though the publisher claims that the video has been enhanced. However, it's a must-have for any collection of WWII military history.
