9 of 9 people found the following review helpful By A Customer on July 5, 2000
This is perhaps the most moving volume of one of the most moving documentaries in history. Of all Victory At Sea volumes, I find this one to be the most emotional and powerful, dealing with such strong topics of the Second World War as the defeat of the Third Reich, the Battle of Okinawa and the Kamikaze attacks, and the aftermath of the war. As someone born long after the war was over, I feel that through especially these episodes of Victory At Sea I am connected to the life and feelings of the period. Of all possible sources, this series, with its powerful musical score and original footage, gives a sense of what it felt like: the shame of defeated Germany, the tired joy of victory in Europe, the desperation of the Japanese, the frantic fight for survival by all participants. Even elements such as the common footage of US servicemen living twilight lives between war and peace serving on backstage Pacific islands is honored, as the life and footage may not be the most exciting, but the work they did was extremely important. Out of all documentaries, this volume doesn't seek to explain, but merely show why America fought. The footage, narration and music will give you an adrenaline rush and also move you to tears.
