Absentee's very existence makes the world a better place. 9/10. --NME Magazine

Like Lou Reed with grubbier fingerprints. Four stars. --Q Magazine

Product Description

Born to the sounds of Barry Manillow and The Carpenters, raised on romantic comedies, and schooled in failed love and misfiring lust, Absentee emerges well-versed in the rigors of romance with their finest album to date, Victory Shorts. Finding a seat between unreachable romanticism and hopeless realism, Victory Shorts offers lush mini romantic tragedies for those who thought Casablanca ended a little too abruptly. Opener "Shared" sets the scene with a couple pleased as punch that they found each other, until things take a darker turn with Absentee smashing their way through "Boy, Did She Teach You Nothing," latest EP title-track "Bitchstealer," and "Love Has Had Its Way" in an attempt to get to the truth of the matter: Happy endings don't come easy.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not Absent For Me!, September 30, 2009
This review is from: Victory Shorts (Audio CD)
I don't know where these guys come from, but... I'm glad that I found them. I don't know how long they've been around, but I'm glad that they're here.

Absentee brings together a deep bass male voice that reminds me of some cult 90s music. The back up vocals are assisted by a light & breathy female voice that truly makes the whole album sound harmonious and crisp. I find myself humming these songs long after I've shut them off.

I would describe this as definitely 90s inspired, some folk music in there too. When listening, I picture it raining outside, while I'm sitting inside, sipping a cup of tea and looking out the window at the fall foliage. Or, I could also totally listen to Absentee while driving. I find myself being transported by their music and I am able to think. This is TRUE music. Where the noise doesn't overpower their message in their songs.

The lyrics are very good, yet at times a bit... cute. Some would say corny even. But, I think it really goes with the entire package of the album anyway.

Relaxing, inspirational, meditational, etc. I can see this playing at a coffee shop or in a deserted bar. I listen to it while I'm working and/or writing. It really is addictive and so soothing- so unique even. I really really like it and am really really glad that I've found Absentee.

If you like 90s music, bits of folk music, piano, guitar, uniquely deep male voices, rainy days, and having the ability to THINK while you're just "chilling out", then this album is for you. No distractions, just pure and simple lyrics and music.
