5.0 out of 5 stars I Loved Victory in Singleness
This book is terrific! I found Victory In Singleness to be a practical book that gave me soultions to feelings I had been experiencing but not openly sharing with others. My struggle had been with envy and bitterness. As a 40+ year old woman, I've wanted to read a book that talked about what I have experienced and this is the first book that has done so. 3.0 out of 5 stars A Great Book...if You Take the Time
"Victory in Singleness" is a great book if you can get into it. The way that it is structured, with the three sections of the book each focusing on a different emoiton, can be somewhat of a turnoff for people who do not feel they are struggling with a particular issue. Usually books on singleness patty-cake around these issues and also seem to be geared twards the early twenty-something crowd. This was also a fun book to read. The chapters were short, there were interesting and down to earth "stories" of other women, and little quizzes that helped me to hone in on what I was really feeling. I highly recommend this book. If you are struggling with being single, or if you are struggling with envy, disappointment or bitterness (there are other reasons besides singleness), this book can make a difference.

4.0 out of 5 stars Finally some truth about the struggles of being single, May 29, 2002

For everyone who has ever struggled with some of the hidden battles of singlehood I would highly recommend this book. It is very straightforward and honest in the emotions that it brings to the mind of its reader. I found that the authors were very vunerable in sharing thier own experiences as singles. The book is balanced in that it deals with emotional challenges as well as looking into some deeper psychological explanations as to why some people may be having a hard time finding contentment as individuals. I really enjoyed the variety of methods/excerises used to help guide the reader into deeper understanding of the various topics presented. I would highly recommend it to anyone who is single especially Christians singles.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth the price - and More!, May 17, 2002
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Victory in Singleness: A Strategy for Emotional Peace (Paperback)
This book is outstanding, from cover to cover. When I purchased this book, I was only expecting to learn more about ministry to singles. But, Valerie Clayton provides excellent insight and counsel on topics such as: forgiveness, bitterness, self-esteem, perfectionism, betrayal, grudges, feelings of being trapped, etc. This book not only relates to singles, but to every Christian.

Last, but not least, I recommend this book because it is thoroughly Biblical. Rather than just having the appearance of being "Christian", and sprinkling the script with a few proof texts once in awhile, Valerie Clayton's genuine faith and confidence in God are evident throughout. She believes that Christ can truly make a difference in people's lives.

5.0 out of 5 stars A refreshing, honest and insightful look at singleness, March 28, 2002
By

This review is from: Victory in Singleness: A Strategy for Emotional Peace (Paperback)
What a refreshing book! In Victory Over Singleness, Valerie and Jerome Clayton have very honestly examined the range of feelings, thoughts, actions and reactions that women have as related to their singleness. Extremely well-written and easy to read, the book contains short chapters filled with powerful examples, both fictional and real, that vividly depict what many women don't always readily reveal - their discontent with being single. Women everywhere will breathe a collective sigh of relief knowing that they are not alone in experiencing feelings of bitterness, envy, jealousy (among others) often associated with singleness. Not only do the Claytons honestly discuss the reality and commonality of such feelings, but they include quizzes on different topics so that readers may determine if they harbor them. But far from just exploring the various feelings and issues that can arise out of singleness, the Claytons, out of their combined experience, wisdom and professional expertise, provide clear and insightful counsel on acknowledging and overcoming the attitudes and emotions that prevent victory in singleness. One last note, as a married woman who has read this book, I believe that it can be helpful to anyone who needs to discover the source of negative feelings and who desires to overcome them.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Life-Changing Book, April 29, 2002
By

This review is from: Victory in Singleness: A Strategy for Emotional Peace (Paperback)
Valerie and Jerome Clayton draw upon personal experience to paint a vivid picture of what it REALLY feels like to be a single Christian woman. Most importantly, they also draw upon their experience to provide concrete, practical, proven strategies for overcoming oppressive feelings of bitterness, envy, and hopelessness. I am a married woman who initially bought this book with my many single Christian friends in mind. However, I found myself unable to put it down once I started reading it. The Claytons' insights and powerful wisdom gained from their own REAL experience (not merely from textbook theories) helped me to conquer some of my own long-standing negative feelings that had taken root in my life. The book gave me a new outlook on some of my negative thoughts and behaviors --and gave me the tools to change them. It clearly presented powerful ideas in an easy-to-read fashion and equipped me with practical exercises and thought-provoking questions. The authors write with clarity and confidence in God's ability to provide single women with true and lasting peace. As I read the book, I felt that I was being given the chance to sit at the feet of someone who had walked the often difficult road of singleness, and was now willing to share her learning with other women... to make their journeys richer and more joyous.

3.0 out of 5 stars A Great Book...if You Take the Time, January 31, 2007

"Victory in Singleness" is a great book if you can get into it. The way that it is structured, with the three sections of the book each focusing on a different emoiton, can be somewhat of a turnoff for people who do not feel they are struggling with a particular issue. However, if you remain open, you will likely find some helpful advice. I read it for a bookclub and it seemed to resonate more with women who have been single for longer periods of time and who may have dealt with more of these issues. I suspect that more people would be interested in this book if it contained more anecdotes to illustrate some of the points.

5.0 out of 5 stars Biblically based self-retrospective, January 18, 2007
This review is from: Victory in Singleness: A Strategy for Emotional Peace (Paperback)
This book deliveres what it promises in that it has spiritually based advice for single women looking for a mate. I laughed a little, cried and prayed a lot when I saw myself in this book. It it self retrospective and you have to be prepared to look at yourself on the inside where you don't always let people see. For me this was the hardest part. It is biblically based so you will need your Bible. I am trying read it again and actually do every exercise with true conviction. I cannot say that I am emotionally at peace but this is a book worth reading. It doesn't say give you dating tips or how to pick up people or how to tell if he is lying or anything like that. I came across this book while watching a documentary about single black women that the author was one of the subjects so she is someone who speaks about this matter from the experience of someone who had been single for a while.
