2.0 out of 5 stars Be very careful with this book!
While the majority of this work is very well written and changed much of my outlook regarding my daily walk, I found certain aspects of the author's theology to be flawed, and that concerns me; hence, I write this review.

The book asserts multiple times that a Christian is not a sinner saved by grace, but rather, a saint who sometimes sins. That's a scary...

This review is from: Victory over the Darkness: Realizing the Power of Your Identity in Christ (Paperback)
In Victory over the Darkness, Neil Anderson provides a guide for healing of past wounds and for experiencing future victory. In Victory over the Darkness Dr. Anderson doesn't suggest change through behavior modification or external rules and regulation. Instead he gets to the issue of living according to our identity in Christ. His sections on healing past wounds and how to continue on the journey of spiritual maturity were very good. I appreciate that this book on emotional health was based on theology and not psychology. I believe it is a good, practical tool for the pastor and for the Christian mental health professional. While the book was strong in emphasizing our new identity in Christ, I felt it was weak in exposing the depravity of self. I've found that until a person abandons all hope in the self-life they will have difficulty rejecting it for their new life in Christ. This book would be a good book to read in tandem with Christ-Esteem by Don Matzat. I see them as being an effective balance for each other.

Anderson writes very plainly and passionately who we as Christians are in Christ Jesus. In order to have "Victory Over the Darkness", we NEED to know who we are in Christ. I like the fact that Anderson doesn't proof-text Scripture, coming up with his own ideas of what the Bible says, but rather spends a significant portion of several chapters listing specific Scriptures that clearly identify our wonderful identity in Christ.

A very worthwhile book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book !, March 28, 2000
This review is from: Victory over the Darkness: Realizing the Power of Your Identity in Christ (Paperback)
I highly recommend this book to anyone who may be suffering from spiritual opression. The book outlines the easy steps to victory over the enemy of our souls. In Christ, you are more than a conqueror. I have given away copies of this book to my friends. I highly recommend this book and "The Bondage Breaker" also written by Neil Anderson. Break free today from the lies of the enemy by understanding who you are in Christ Jesus. You'll be amazed and blessed when you learn the THRUTH about God's goodness. May the lord bless you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Every Christian needs to read this eye-opening book!, August 31, 1999

This review is from: Victory over the Darkness: Realizing the Power of Your Identity in Christ (Paperback)
It's amazing how little we know about who we are in Christ. I had no idea that I was already FREE from sin until I read this engaging and informative presentation of how to lead a victorious Christian life. I purchased the book for all my leaders, and they were changed by the discovery that the battle with sin has already been won! We need only reinforce the victory Christ gave us on the cross. I highly recommend this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars It is a spiritual eye opener, June 25, 1999

I have read Neil's book, Victory over the Darkness , at least half a dozen times. I don't always read it the whole way through but concentrate on the parts which give me the most help. It is a book that I often give to friends as a gift of love or sometimes as a means of helping them find a way to help themselves. I like the charts Neil has included. They are easy to understand and can explain a concept in a moment. Most of all I like his lists of... Who I am in Christ.

This review is from: Victory over the Darkness: Realizing the Power of Your Identity in Christ (Paperback)
This book is a must for anyone looking to others to find their own identity. The author lays the ground work for looking to Christ alone and than presents actual examples he has expereinced. This book has helped me to better understand Jesus Christ in me and me in Him. I couldn't put the book down.
