Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

The Mexican pop group Kabah takes its name from a 10-chambered, ancient Mayan structure and mystical energy zone in the Yucatán Peninsula. The name roughly means "Temple of Masks." Since Kabah's 1993 debut, this talented sextet of singers--Federica, André, Maria Jose, Sergio, Daniela, and René--have fully revealed their up-to-date take on Latin pop. On this CD, their third release, they place urban dance grooves at the top of their musical altar; there's no ballad in sight on this set. High-energy techno beats percolate club-friendly cuts such as the title track, while "Nada Que Perder" rocks with a strobe-light-happy bounce that would make Giorgio Moroder smile. "Ven" rolls with a rave ritmo (with a little rap thrown in), and "Es Como Es" is just funky enough. The group's harmony is tight, and the prominence of the girls' vocals out in front make this outfit fun to listen to. Eugene Holley, Jr.

5.0 out of 5 stars EVOLUCION!, March 10, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: La Vida Que Va (Audio CD)

4.0 out of 5 stars Kabah's best album yet, January 19, 2003
By
This review is from: La Vida Que Va (Audio CD)
My first impression when I played this CD is that they are looking to branch out from the synth-pop roots; a number of songs sound almost like filks of songs I have heard before but can not quite recognize, giving me a sense of deja vu.

My second impression is that Kabah is still struggling to move past their roots as a teeny-bopper band. Some of the stuff has a distinct fluffy quality to it that is the musical equivalent of riding a scooter--fun to listen to, but never admit to anyone that you enjoy the music.

Experienced studio engineers who listen closely to some of the vocals will realize that the singers did a little cheating with voice pitch correcters. I actually think it sounded better back when they heavily reverberated the voices with a Lexicon 480L; the Lexicon trick was particularily effective with their older song "Amor Estudiante".

My main impression, however, is that this is one great album! The CD, as a whole, has an euro-techno feel to it; there are a number of distinct styles of modern synth-pop dance music on this album. As always, the message and music is uplifting and positive, and the beats are dancable. Additionally, the vocal harmonies are even stronger in this album than they were in previous albums, especially in the songs "Vivir por mi", "Tu", and "Llamarme". Federica does an excellent vocal rap in "Ven"; it is the most enjoyable part of that particular song.

The strongest song on the CD is probably its second single, Esta Noche, which has a octave bass line, a la "Blue Monday" by New Order. A very uplifting and positive song with a distinct Mexican flare to it.

I am a little dissapointed that the US version of this album does not have the Big Brother theme to it as a hidden track (I tried both rewinding from song one and going past the last song; in both cases, nothing); it is better to buy this album in México so that one can get the hidden bonus track. The CD has no attempts at "copy protection", you can rip mp3s to listen to on portable players and put on your hard disk.

This album is Kabah's best work so far; I hope their up-and-coming 2003 album is even better. 4 stars out of 5; minus one star for having too much of a teen-bop quality to it and for making the vocal pitch correcter too obvious.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Comeback, August 5, 2002

This review is from: La Vida Que Va (Audio CD)
This group does not stop putting out hit albums! Ever since the first album they have been doing very well. This album has many new sounds of dance that fans of their first two albums would like. SOme fans might have been lost after they put out XNE but they are definately recuperating the new dance sound. This also has the song from the novela that is out now in the U.S. So if you are reluctant cause they have changed their style lately do not hesitate wit h this one because they are back and better!
