Product Description

Vidal Sassoon is more than just a hairdresser - he's a rock star, an artist, a craftsman who changed the world with a pair of scissors. With the geometric, Bauhaus-inspired hairdos he pioneered in the 1960s and his wash and wear philosophy that liberated generations of women from the tyranny of the salon, Sassoon revolutionized the art of hairstyling and left an indelible mark on popular culture. This documentary traces with visual gusto the life of a self-made man whose passion and perseverance took him from an orphanage in London to the absolute pinnacle of his craft.

5.0 out of 5 stars "You will surprise yourself," May 30, 2012
Format:DVD
Dedicated to Vidal Sassoon, beloved, obit. 9 May, 2012.

VIDAL SASSOON: THE MOVIE (originally THE MAN WHO CHANGED THE WORLD WITH A PAIR OF SCISSORS, 2011, 95 minutes).

There are few, if any other, people whose mere name can evoke not just an era but an intimate, major portion of one's life like Vidal Sassoon. When I was nothing more than a two-bit artist with a comic book style, Vidal Sassoon made me not only feel as if I could look good: he made me think I could cut hair! His famous commercials may very well be the most immediately recognizable in history because of the music and the saying: "If you don't look good, we don't look good!"

This delightful homage documentary allows Vidal to tell his own story, in his own words with that voice I have always loved almost as much as I love Bach: that rich, deep, soft, velvety and sparkly voice that defied bass or baritone. Here, we learn all about Vidal Sassoon, from his childhood in a Jewish orphanage in London to his success as a beginner hairdresser - all the way to the literal creation of new style, new fashion and of course new hair styles.

He would go on, of course, to set up Vidal Sassoon salons, schools and revolutionize even the way hair styling, products and salons were advertized. He would star on TV as many times as any great star, and hosted his own show for about 300 episodes. Perhaps his biggest achievement aside from his revolutionizing the cutting of hair was the introduction of the hair salon as we now know it. Vidal Sassoon removed women's excessive hair, ditched the beehive and back-combed jobs, to give us a 21st century look, the geometric look that stylists only dared try to copy in the early 1980s.

This film vibrantly brings to life all of his accomplishments, from the incredible Five Point haircut to his building of 23 houses in New Orleans in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. From his introduction of a totally new lifestyle revolving around 'wash-n-wear' hair to his establishment of schools all over the world ... oh, I could go on but I think you should watch this instead.

Get this and relish it on a regular basis - and most of all, be thankful you lived when he lived, even though he is not with us in body now.

Vidal Sassoon is with us in every other way, and never forget that.

3.0 out of 5 stars Wrong cover art? December 15, 2011
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
I purchased this as a gift for someone who is a hairdresser obsessed with Vidal Sassoon. It is a bit disappointing that Amazon is apparently selling the Canadian(?) version of the DVD with cover art that is unattractive and, frankly, amateur looking, and not the cover art that is shown on their own website.

Whereas this is not a reflection of the movie, I am writing this review to let people know that Amazon isn't selling exactly what is advertised. Yes, people will be annoyed that I am giving a bad review since it doesn't reflect the content of the movie, but Amazon doesn't allow for an "Amazon's representation of this product" review, and until they do, I will leave reviews in the product category so that people will know what they are getting.

How hard is it to just put up a picture of the actual product? I couldn't even find the actual cover art for the DVD that I received anywhere online so that I could post a link to it. To be honest, the packaging seems so flimsy and so amateur, it looks like a bootleg.
