A comprehensive basic reference book,
By G Grierson (Scotland) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Video Games Guide (Paperback)
In my opinion one of these reviewers entirely missed the point of this book.
This is a simple reference guide, and it has many games listed. I'm not sure what the omissions mentioned in the other review were, as I've found a listing for everything I've looked for so far! As a very simple bare-bones reference book I think this is one of the best and most comprehensive out there. The indexing system is simple and immediately understandable by anyone, and that's really all you need from this type of book. On the other hand... if you are looking for a book that reviews and explains things, then this probably isn't for you.

The Big One,
This review is from: Video Games Guide (Paperback)
The Video Games Guide is a good ole' chunky guide to video games from 1962-2006. Tailor made for a longtime gamer like me.
It is presented like a film guide but I'd say its more entertaining thanks to the screenshots and the enthusiastic writing style of the author. I've spent a good few hours dipping through it and still feel i've only just scratched the surface. It's one of those books that's so packed, whatever page you open it on you find a game you remember. When i'm at work I find myself thinking `I wonder if it's got Road Rash or what about Wing Commander?' and it hasn't disappointed me yet. So the video games guide, you get the full five stars from me.

Incomplete and disappointing,

This review is from: Video Games Guide (Paperback)
With so many other great video game and videogame history books out there, it is hard to recommend this one since it fails on many levels. It claims to be [...], but has MANY omissions that make it difficult for me to, in good conscience, recommend it to anyone.
I had hopes for this book, but it was very much a disappointment since it really does not succeed on any level, except that of a brief overview [...] that have been released. In my opinion, it had good intentions at the beginning, then simply caved in upon itself. Sorry..... Not recommended. Save your money [...], or any of the other books that truly illuminate the history and scope of video game history. Not recommended. |
