4.0 out of 5 stars BROKEN HEART PALS, March 28, 2006
This review is from: Video Girl Ai, Vol. 6: Cutting Room (Paperback)
It doesn't look like things are gonna work out between Yota and Noboku but Yota isn't allowed to feel sorry for himself for long as he runs into a strange girl named Natsumi on the subway who's also nursing a broken heart and has come to town to make contact with her estranged boyfriend. Did I mention the fact that she's broke and carrying all her earthly possessions on her back? After she saves Yota from being beaten to a pulp by some street thugs it's kinda hard to refuse to let her stay at his house with him and Ai. Meanwhile videogirl Mai continues to wait for the oppurtune moment to erase Ai.

The great thing about the Video Girl Ai series is that all of the chracters are emotionally honest. They might be screwed up in the head and not know where their feelings lie or who they really love, but at least they don't lie about it. They tell and act on what they're feeling at the moment. There are some bad spots of writing in this volume, especially when Yota KNOWS Ai's life is in danger but he forestalls helping her in order to talk things over with Noboku. Katsura's artwork makes up for some of the absurd moments with some of the most delicate and detailed art in the manga business and he's also no slouch in the action department either.

I would also recommend the Ah My Goddess tv anime series on dvd.
