This review is from: Video Girl Ai, Vol. 7: Retake (Paperback)
Ai's creator has given her a second chance after she defeats Mai, the second video girl that was sent to erase and replace her. He admires her spirit and even begins a new experiment with her as his pawn. If she can make a man fall in love with her, he has promised to make her fully human. But Ai's tape could run out anytime. If it runs out before she makes someone love her, she will be erased! The catch is that she cannot tell anyone, even Yota, about the deal. Yota refuses to love her as anything more than a sister because he thinks that she has limited time in the real world and that losing her would be too painful. So he avoids getting involved with her. He begins to get wrapped up in the on again off again relationship between Moemi and his best friend Takashi. There's something really funny going on between the two and Yota feels confused and unable to understand what the problem between them is. But increasingly he is becoming Moemi's shoulder to cry on, which is starting to rekindle the old emotions for he still harbors in his heart.
This series is starting to get old because Yota is becoming even a bigger schmuk than usual. In earlier volumes he was willing to brave death and torture to save Ai because he loved her so much, but now he's such a wuss that he's afraid to become involved with her. And he does it in such an uncaring and cold way. He's like "She's going to die anyway, why bother?" A real man would treasure the time he DOES have with her. The ironic thing is that if he had any courage in his body, he could make her a real person instead of a video girl! It's almost like Yota is becoming the villain of this series. Something starting going a little fake, when last volume, he almost let Ai get killed to meet up with an ex-girlfriend. What an unfeeling idiot! I'll go one more volume of Video Girl Ai but if Yota doesn't start getting his act together I'm giving up.
