Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

Ah, yes, the VIDEO MOVIE GUIDE. As mass market managing editor, I am in charge of the production of this title every year. It is a thrilling, difficult, fascinating process that begins in March and runs through most of July. For the 1999 edition, for the first time we brought the huge database in-house, where I got to spend weeks and weeks in the corner computer room, going through our compendium of more than 17,000 films. Being able to work on the computer myself allowed me to do things that I've wanted to do for years: Get rid of dual names (for example, combine the movies indexed under Charles S. Dutton with the ones under Charles Dutton, for they are indeed the same person), alphabetize everything so the reader can find what they are looking for easily, and correct certain little mistakes that kept popping up year after year. Of all the books that I work on over the course of the year, none fills me with the sense of pride I feel when the VIDEO MOVIE GUIDE actually comes out and I am holding the huge book in my tiny hands. And because of my involvement in the production of the book, all year long I get phone calls and e-mails from friends and relatives asking me questions like, "Who's that guy in that movie . . .?" I pride myself on knowing the answer off the top of my head, but if I don't, I know just where to look.

4.0 out of 5 stars Old editions, were best organized, September 22, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Video Movie Guide 1999 (Video and DVD Guide) (Paperback)
This is the third edition (1999) I bought. Older editions classified videos as drama, sci-fi, etc. For me, was a quick reference video in this way. Now, I have to look through the actor list, that is not in page order, as others editions and go again in the alphabetical order of all of the movies to see the description of the movie I want. Please, return to the format of the past editions; in clasifications of type of video, and list with page number in the actor/director video list.

Thanks, A perpetual reader of your guide.

5.0 out of 5 stars O.k. I gave it a 5 stars, but ......, April 13, 2000
This review is from: Video Movie Guide 1999 (Video and DVD Guide) (Paperback)
A huge effort sure stands behind this wonderful book. It's simply amazing, handy and very useful besides being great fun too. But I think the authors should consider the following:

1. Like dictionaries, they should consider having alphabetical letters on top of pages with guide words as a hint for the alphabitical sorting.

2. They should focus on the film story rather than giving their own opinion out of their own point of view. I think it would be more helpful this way.

3. Some films I was surprised not to find like Forrest Gump for example.

I think if these points were added. The book will be the best ever on the market. But as an overall look, I think it's already the best on the market. It's simply Unmatched.

Not only is this book jam-packed with excellent movie reviews, the cross-references by director and actor make it easy to locate difficult-to-remember titles. But the best part is, they only review movies that you can actually rent. Many of the reviews really tell it like it is, and I really appreciate the wit and humour that the writers put into their reviews as well.
