Ah, yes, the VIDEO MOVIE GUIDE. As mass market managing editor, I am in charge of the production of this title every year. It is a thrilling, difficult, fascinating process that begins in March and runs through most of July. For the 1999 edition, for the first time we brought the huge database in-house, where I got to spend weeks and weeks in the corner computer room, going through our compendium of more than 17,000 films. Being able to work on the computer myself allowed me to do things that I've wanted to do for years: Get rid of dual names (for example, combine the movies indexed under Charles S. Dutton with the ones under Charles Dutton, for they are indeed the same person), alphabetize everything so the reader can find what they are looking for easily, and correct certain little mistakes that kept popping up year after year. Of all the books that I work on over the course of the year, none fills me with the sense of pride I feel when the VIDEO MOVIE GUIDE actually comes out and I am holding the huge book in my tiny hands. And because of my involvement in the production of the book, all year long I get phone calls and e-mails from friends and relatives asking me questions like, "Who's that guy in that movie . . .?" I pride myself on knowing the answer off the top of my head, but if I don't, I know just where to look.
