5.0 out of 5 stars The Most Informative
Videohound's ratings pretty much parallel Maltin's, but the entries provide more detailed information on plot and production.

3.0 out of 5 stars My Mistake--OK Book
I bought this thinking it had reviews of ALL movies; instead, it only has reviews of movies on DVDs or VHS. I believe it is complete but sometimes wonder if the movies I see on cable aren't already in VHS or DVD and are simply missing from this book. The info on each movie is sparse and barely better than a newspaper's weekly guide. It gives the most info on those...

5.0 out of 5 stars MY FAVORITE MOVIE GUIDE!, January 9, 2007

This review is from: Videohound's Golden Movie Retriever (Paperback)
Videohound's Golden Movie Retriever is always my must-have movie guide. Its reviews are very down-to-earth, and it never takes itself too seriously.

The movies are listed alphabetically, but it also has excellent indexes (by cast member, director, composer, writer, or cinematographer). So, if you enjoyed someone's work in one movie, you can look up what else he/she has contributed to in the past.

It also has a category index, with some headings being fairly serious (such as "Amateur Sleuths") and others being a bit less so (such as the following: "Alien Babes," "Alien Beings--Benign," "Alien Beings--Vicious," "Alien Cops," and "Aliens Are People, Too").

On the inside front cover, the "bones" rating scale is explained: Four Bones's explanation is "Masterful cinematic expression. Flawless or nearly so. Will want to recommend to complete strangers on the street." On the other end, "Woof! (No Bones)" means "Watching your neighbors vacation videos might be less painful. May be redeemed by stretches of unintentional amusement." (You can get all the rest of the explanations for the number of bones they rate something by checking out the inside front cover yourself. I just wanted to give you a feeling for the mindset of this movie guide.)

As you've guessed, this is not a stuffy movie guide. They have a rating for pretty much everything out there, and the editors have diverse, even-handed taste. If you are a movie buff, I think this belongs in your collection of movie guides.

I found that this book is a great asset for selecting movies, old and new, from Netflix. We have enjoyed movies that we had long since forgotten and others that we had never heard of. We have not been disappointed with any movie that this book rated highly.

4.0 out of 5 stars All About Films - Videohound's Golden Movie Retriever 2007, March 18, 2007
This review is from: Videohound's Golden Movie Retriever (Paperback)
Videohound's Golden Movie Retriever 2007 is the most comprehensive book on films that I've found. I checked several books on the subject in stores and even bought one(sight unseen)from a bargain book source. Golden Movie Reviewer topped them all. It has everything from titles, stars, directors and award winners well indexed and easy to use. And the price is right too.

VideoHound's Golden Movie Retriever is THE sourcebook for movie buffs. Comprehensive, informative, frequently amusing, and packed with reviews of more movies than you could view in a lifetime...if you're a celluloid junkie, this is a great fix! Ten out of 5 bones! VideoHound also has several titles that are genre-specific (i.e., Cult, Indie, Horror, Asian, etc.).
