Book Description

Videohound's July 2004
Cold wars. Hot babes. Cool spies. Warm flesh. Good vibes. Resist authority. Remain nonchalant. "VideoHound's Groovy Movies is an enlightening entertaining eye-opening excursion to more than 200 of the most intriguing and extreme works in cinematic history--films so weird, so wacky, so cool, they're guaranteed to make jaws drop even today. More than very complicated espionage with arresting cleavage was in the air. Much more. It was a renaissance era for art in general, and these celluloid time capsules from the Age of Aquarius are mind-blowing in their diversity. To this labor of love, Irv Slifkin brings his years of movie reviewing expertise as co-editor of the massive "Movies Unlimited Video Catalog. With 125 extremely cool photos, "Groovy Movies is organized in 20 arresting chapters, from Criminal Elements to England Swings to Don't Bogart That Trip to Bond and Beyond. Oh ya, and Do They Make You Horny, Baby? Foreword contributor Roger Corman surveys his classic films from the era, including his first-hand research for "The Trip.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Compulsively readable. An insightful, enlightening and very entertaining book about the most colorful and vital period in film history. Slifkin and company bring an accomplished movie lover's perceptive to the subject, underlining the wide array of films of the New Wave of the 1960s and '70s. Each analysis is impressively balanced and provides great clarity on the importance of the 'psychedelic era.' I love this book."

As the old saying goes, "If you can remember the 60's, then you weren't really there". That may be predominently true, so here's a fantastic flashback for your fuzz-toned, drug-adled mind during the onset of spacy senile dementia for all you boomers. And for those not-yet-conceived during the heyday of hippies, spies, spaghetti westerns, good vibrations, remarkable psychedelics, go-go boots, love-ins, the watusi, lovebeads and paisley hip-hugger elephant bellbottoms, rejoice - this book will get you closer to that era than a fistful of Austin Powers flicks and a bongful of kush. Mindblowing, shagadelic, and psychotically trippy, the sexy-psych-cinema of yesteryear is resurrected for re-examination that's a s**tload of fun for everybody who enjoys far-out films, both good and bad, and is reflected upon not academically nor condescendingly, but affectionately and with proper irreverence. 'Turn on, tune in and drop out' of sight with this book for a freaky foray into the fab facts of your fave 60's cult flix and groovy chicks. Dig it.

This is a great reference movie/DVD book for all those far out films of the Psychedelic Era. From GET SMART to AUSTIN POWERS. A little flare for the 50's and 60's, CASINO ROYALE, Peter Sellers, VALLEY OF THE DOLLS and BEYOND...If you collect films from the likes of BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY'S or IN LIKE FLINT, you'll need this reference book to see what you're missing.
