LVE Vol 9 contains a lot of live material from Schulze's endless touring with Rainer Bloss between 1982 and 1985. Most of the instruments of this time were digital and the music was a lot more rhythmical than his earlier music. Not one of my favorite sets in the series, mainly because I am more partial to the "warmer" sounding analogue synths of a few years earlier (and which he returned to incorporating into his sound late in the 90s onward) but certainly this was a very popular time in Schulze's career so a lot of people liked this period. He and Rainer played to sold out halls and arenas all over Europe during this time. I recommend the entire LVE series to fans and collectors who have followed Klaus' career over the years as I have.

The entire LVE collection provides a very generous coverage of Schulze's music up to the year 2000, a good combination of studio tapes and live concert tapes. In assembling my own LVE set, I put off the middle ones till last, since I had read several comments online that these were not as good as many of the others. So, I was pleased to find that vol.9 does not fit this generalization. If you like Schulze's music, LVE 9 contains much that bears repeated plays (and if that seems like faint praise, then I suppose the same could be said of Mozart). Other parts of LVE 9 are not as impressive. As is the case with the other LVE boxes, each of the 3 CDs contains between 76 and 79 minutes of music (minus some 11 minutes total of interviews); so if well over an hour of really good Schulze music is worth the $15-$20 this one might cost you, it's a good deal.

The liner notes do give a hint that this might not be the best of the collections. I own all 8 sets before this one. There are still moments of good things especially on the first disc. The long interviews at the end on disc 3 have less value for me. I look forward to the completing tenth in the series. I think it would be impossible to have uniform quality in such a biographical work but KS never fails to highlight something new or interesting.
