Book Description

March 2002
Do you contemplate a visit to Vietnam? This book shows you what to expect, whether by bicycle or other means. There are many observations about the country.

Did you protest the Vietnam War once? This book is partly about Vietnam as an unenthused draftee, but mostly about what has happened there since, plus a bit about Vietnam long ago.

This isn't a book of war stories, and there are no made-up tales such as bicycles crashing over cliffs. Rather, it's a factual and informative account of a fascinating country and its people, including 159 color photographs plus maps and drawings.

It's NOT the Vietnam that many thought they knew!

Editorial Reviews

Review

"...an informative and engaging travelogue replete with gorgeous color photography, detailed maps, and poignant personal observations..." -- Midwest Book Review, April 2002

This book was a prizewinner in the travel/recreation category, summer of 2003. -- Colorado Independent Publishers Association

From the Author

I was once drafted and sent to Vietnam. My country did great wrong there, but I discovered a beautiful land and I wanted to see it again without war in the way. In 1998, I did. I knew I could write better if I did it again, so I went again in 1999.

I'm a photographer who came back from each bicycle trip with about a thousand photographs. But only 159 of these fit into the book, along with maps and two drawings by My, who is in Da Nang.

I did the Hanoi-Ho Chi Minh City bicycle ride a third time in 2002. This time, I came back not with a book, but with a program of photographs that I present to various groups.

Those few who still think the Vietnam War was the best thing ever invented won't like me, or this book. They may give various reasons, but this is usually the real one. Other comment has been very encouraging, including that from veterans. Some people lost track of this mysterious land for a while, as I did. But I like to discover a success story! And Vietnam is a geography not easily forgotten, populated by a brave people.

The book has been thoroughly reedited and improved since the earlier CD version, though not quite as many photos would fit into the paperback edition.

Vietnam In The Absence Of War: One Immoral War, Two Revealing Bicycle Trips by Thomas G. Rampton is an informative and engaging travelogue replete with gorgeous color photography, detailed maps, and poignant personal observations of his bicycle trips through Vietnam in 1998 and 1999. Picturesque, vivid, wistful, and a recommended joy for armchair travelers, for Viet Nam bound visitors, and for anyone curious to learn about what life is really like in modern-day Vietnam.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good man who can't hold a grudge., October 11, 2007

I really liked this short read. Like most good stories, this one is a familiar subject, told from a different view. Namely, that of a soldier who went back simply as a man, and found a warm and friendly people waiting for him. If you are uncharmed by Mr. Rampton's dry wit, which can't hide anywhere in this book, you are made of harder stuff than this reader is.

2.0 out of 5 stars Better to be found, September 18, 2002

I found the writing to be a bit stiff and the overall book not that engaging. Too many pithy, non-exciting anecdotes. Unless you need to read a book about this man's journey's look elsewhere
