Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 7 Up The past several years of American preoccupation with the examination of our involvement in, and the outcomes of, the Vietnam War have engendered a number of books about that struggle for almost every level of reader. If another book is needed for the middle/high school age, this one provides a well-organized, readable telling of the ancient to modern history of Vietnam as well as the major details of the U.S. involvement in its longest war. Hauptly gives an even presentation of the causes and effects of events in Southeast Asia and of the political and social occurences in the U.S. The narrative is weakened a few times by sentimentality as in, "the night before the peace was signed, the gigantic and deeply saddened heart of Lyndon Baines Johnson gave out, broken from seeing his dream of a just and great society shattered on a foreign shore." For the most part, though, Hauptly gives a well-tailored progression. Except that it provides more of the history of Southeast Asia, this book covers essentially the same material as Mabie's Vietnam There and Here (Holt, 1985) and Lawson's The U.S. in the Vietnam War (Crowell, 1981).
