Book Description

November 2000
Like hundreds of thousands of others within this generation, my life, plans, and hopes were interrupted by an event which most of us have tended to look back upon with puzzlement, frequently with deep resentment, all too often with shame.

More than enough of us who participated in it don't care to look back at all, choosing rather to seal off those often painful memories and get on with the business of our lives.

The sad fact, however, is that this event, the Vietnam War, continues to this day to affect the lives of thousands of those who fought there.

For my part, the personal confusion, distress, and quest for understanding have led me in a different direction. What, I have asked myself, was the real objective of our war, the Vietnam War? What were we Americans really trying to do there? And above all, why?

Vietnam: Fresh, Positive Insights discovers some new answers to these decades-old questions. If you know people who would find this book comforting, resolving or helpful, please give them a copy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Insight into how the Vietnam veteran feels about the war and the response of the American public, June 12, 2007
This review is from: Vietnam: Fresh Positive Insights For All Who Suffered Loss in the Vietnam War (Paperback)
As someone who lived through the later years of the Vietnam War and a student of history, I understand how divisive it was. Having read many of the more unbiased academic examinations and "The Pentagon Papers", there is no question that it was one of the biggest mistakes in the history of the United States. So many people died as a consequence of faulty leadership in the United States. And they are still dying, as is stated in this book, somewhere between 100,000 and 200,000 American veterans of the war have committed suicide since they returned to the United States.
This book is about how many veterans of that conflict feel. They patriotically went over there and what they found was not what was claimed. Most understood that they were not fighting for the grand ideals being touted by people who never left the states, for many they were simply fighting to live through their tour. When they got back, they were snubbed by a society that refused to accept that it was a mistake and that all citizens shared some of the responsibility for it.
If you want to know how the Vietnam veteran really feels about his experiences, then read this book. It is a brief examination of how the American involvement was justified and what the war did to the people who fought it. Many, if not most of them feel that they were simply pawns in a great game where no one really emerged victorious. For in the end, Vietnam was destined to be united under the rule of the North and American involvement did nothing more than delay that by a few years.
