This review is from: Vietnam:Hot Red War [VHS] (VHS Tape)
These are propaganda films in a pure and tragic sense: They promote and inspire belief in a system that ultimately could not work. For any serious student of history or politics, knowing the viewpoint of the other side is essential to fully understand what is truly going on - these films are a rare look at that "other side."
This is the first film released in the United States that give enthusiastic, partisan voice to the victory of our enemies in Vietnam - the communists of the North (or, as this film calls them, "the patriots of Viet Nam"). The Vietnamese revolutionaries saw American soldiers as brainwashed killing machines ("victims of imperialism) who were wasted in war.
The guerilla soldiers explain that they survived using a network of tunnels built from the rubber trees that were torched by U.S. troops. The film is intended to heal the country, bringing the prostitutes, drug addicts, and criminals from Saigon into the harmony with their brothers in the North. This is powerful stuff, and will be hard for some Americans to watch. It can fuel explosive emotions.
Note: These films were produced by Soviet filmmakers under the control and supervision of the Soviet government. They is being made available on home video in the United States through an arrangement with The Society for Cultural Relations, U.S./U.S.S.R. - a non-profit group established by the Soviet and the American people after World War II. These films may be considered a work of Soviet Propaganda.
Many of the films are one-of-a-kind, exported from the Soviet Union to the United States in various conditions. Each film is presented in its entirety, without editing. The producers of this video ask you to "forgive the blemishes in return for the opportunity to view rare historical programming."
