Grade 6-10AThis revision of Cole's 1989 title has a strikingly different cover, but the format and much of the material inside remain the same. Report writers will appreciate the initial "Facts" and "History at a Glance" pages. The longer, early chapters on geography, history, people, and culture are largely unchanged. The shorter, later chapters covering cities and villages, government and social services, resources and economy, and transportation and communications have been reworked. The writing is solid and clear, if not inspired. In an unfortunate error, the author states that there are three cities with populations over one million, then cites Da Nang, with about 800,000 inhabitants, as the country's third largest city. The center portfolio of color photographs remains unchanged; only two of the generally drab black-and-white photographs have been replaced. Although not as current, David K. Wright's Vietnam (Children's Press, 1989) is a more attractive offering, similar in scope but with greater emphasis on the history of the last century.ADiane S. Marton, Arlington County Library, VA
