Shelby Stanton's book "Vietnam: Order of Battle" is a recent re-issue of a classic reference text that is essential for anyone who is researching America's long, troubled war in Southeast Asia. The book does not have a narrative, or an overview of the war, it is simply a well-researched and comrehensive breakdown of facts, the engagements that the United States and its allies fought, the organization and insignia of the units that serves in Vietnam, the fixed wing aircraft, the ubiquitous helicopters, small arms, heavy weapons, armor that were used, the deployments and casualties, military terms and finally, a very useful series of maps of the conflict. Shelby Stanton is an authority on the War in Vietnam and has authored many books on the subject and this large coffee-table volume is the product of an unusually dedicated and indefatigable researcher.

The poor quality of the photographs as compared to the original Order of Battle is the factor that makes me question my purchase. It seems as if a no attention was paid to reprinting clear pictures.

This is a must have if you research units that served in Vietnam. This book goes down to the battalion level or special companies, provides where they were, when they were there, and the number of people assigned. Gives good descriptions of what the units did even if you have to go to a higher unit.

I haven't finished reading it but I really like the book. I served in a small unit that was highly classified in the Central Highlands and the unit is listed in it. Amazing. A lot of research went into this book that's for sure.

I have shared this book with my brothers at the the local VFW and American Legion and they get a kick out of seeing their units named, campiagns and dates of service. The pictures of the equipment we used and the glossary of terms bring us back to that time of "when we were soldiers"...and a darned sight younger! I will eventually donate the book to our reference library at our Post 1089.

Welcome home brothers...Tom 1BN/8INF/4DIV Bravo Co., May 1967-68

I am now looking for a resource for After Action Reports.
