Book Description

January 1996 Lands, Peoples, and Cultures
Four new countries and nine updated editions have been added to Bobbie Kalman's popular Lands, Peoples, and Cultures series. These powerful and intimate portraits of countries use up-to-date information and full-color photography. Presented in a mini series format, three books per country ensures thorough coverage of all the important aspects. It also allows more students to work on different projects at the same time. Covering more than basic history and geography, students will be fascinated to learn about:

-- the land... geography, agriculture, transportation, history, industry, and glorious wonders

-- the people... unique customs, customs we share, problems faced by minority groups and women

-- the culture... modern festivals, ancient processions, food, games, and more

Vietnam the people introduces readers to the people introduces readers to the people of Vietnam, a diverse group which includes small tribes in highland areas, ethnic Chinese, and Amerasians. The everyday lives of the family and devotion to its members are presented along with their homes, education, language, and food.

Topics include:
-- home and family
-- Vietnamese beliefs and heroes
-- occupations
-- education and language
-- life in a village, city, on the river, and in the hills

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 3-6-These three slim volumes are similar in content to Audrey Seah's Vietnam (Marshall Cavendish, 1993), but are less detailed and written for a younger audience. Culture focuses on such topics as music, the theater, fashion, foods (with recipes), architecture, crafts, beliefs, and celebrations. In addition to geographic and climatic information, Land includes a brief history and descriptions of farming, fishing, the transportation network, and wildlife. People covers family structure; housing; life in the city, the hills, and on the river; language; education; livelihoods; and pastimes. There is little overlap among the clearly written, accurate texts. While short on statistics, these books nevertheless give an excellent picture of life in Vietnam, in no small part due to the numerous, full-color, highly interesting photographs. An index and glossary in each volume increase their value for reports, but many students may simply enjoy browsing through them.

Review

This ambitious [Vietnam] series successfully tackles a vast topic in a relatively short space. Fine photos and a well-organized text bring this small, ancient nation into focus for older children. Highly recommended -- Children's Literature
