This new edition of Vietnamese-English Student Dictionary is a reprint of the 1967 Saigon edition and is an expanded version of the author’s earlier Vietnamese-English Dictionary (Saigon, 1959; reprinted, Tokyo, 1966). Still a compact and handy one-volume student reference work—the only one of its kind—this edition contains some 45,000 entries (vice some 25,000 entries of the previous edition), and is thoroughly revised to provide illustrative examples—both morphemes and words—gleaned from newspapers and periodicals, government publications, and textbooks in both languages.
An exceptionally rich corpus, the dictionary lists reduplicative forms, additive forms, verb-object compounds, Sino-Vietnamese compounds, and other polysyllabic loan-words from French, Malay, English, and other languages. The English equivalents are given in clear, accurate, and idiomatic English. A Guide to Pronunciation provides directions to the principal Vietnamese dialects.
