The Vietnamese Revolution, February 5, 2006
This review is from: The Vietnamese Revolution (Library Binding)
This is an excellent book on Vietnamese history from pre-history through the peak of the American involvement in Vietnam. As a history, I would recommend it. The book does give more attention to more recent times but it provides a thorough overall coverage of all major periods. The description of the French in Vietnam does explain a great deal of how American first became involved. Brief stories from the Vietnam War are spaced between the larger chapters. The author's sympathy to the Vietnamese is clear from the stories that he chose to use and from his choice of words throughout the book. Since the book was published in 1973 (the edition I own), this view fit well with the national mood of the time. Regardless, the book does present overall Vietnamese history well and that's rather hard to find. Most of Vietnamese histories only deal with the war itself.
