Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Less than six months after the publication by Cemetery Dance of his mini-masterpiece Demons, Shirley returns with another small-press offering that pushes the envelope of fantasy and horror and strengthens his reputation as one of today's most daring authors of metaphysical fiction. This short novel's premise is that bodiless, "inter-dimensional" beings are conducting studies of humanity, particularly our species' relationship to suffering. First they survey humanity on Earth--abused, violent children; tormented patients in hospitals; a family being tortured by drug dealers; and so on. Then the beings focus on a small set of adult men and women in uppercrust L.A., whom they propel into varied acts of homicidal mayhem. The perpetrators and their victims then wake up in a bland, eerie purgatory, "about as a big as a coliseum... there are side rooms with different kinds of environments." Most notably, there's no exit, other than a momentary respite when one of the inhabitants dies. This hiatus proves as addictive as any drug, and, over time, the captives descend into bestial psychological depths and fling themselves into horrific murders and suicides in order to taste that sweet escape. Shirley is an unpredictable writer, and this is one of his most bizarre bits of writing to date. It's an expertly crafted, ferocious tale that offers a stinging commentary on the worst (and the best) in humans. Graphic to the max, it's bound to be misinterpreted by some and is simply too strong for many, but it's yet another serious work from an important writer and deserves careful consideration by anyone interested in the radical edge of horror.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's not fiction, October 3, 2006
By
This review is from: The View from Hell (Hardcover)
Although the beings doing the "experiments" aren't extraterrestrials (they're probably your neighbors), what Mr. Shirley has written in "The View From Hell" is absolutely true. The next time there's a "tragedy" in your vicinity, look very closely at the crowd watching the festivities--some or all of them probably used the telepathic link that most humans seem to possess to create the circumstances that led to the fire, shooting, drowning, etc., either out of boredom or to see themselves on the evening news. Thank you, Mr. Shirley, your graphic descriptions of these monsters' crimes were awesome!

4.0 out of 5 stars A Witty, Dark Comedy About An Earthly Hell, December 6, 2001
This review is from: The View from Hell (Hardcover)
John Shirley has never been funnier, or more profound, in his dark comedy "A View From Hell", which could be seen as a rock and roll version of Dante's "Inferno" with bits of cyberpunk prose added for some memorable passages. This is a terse tale about how those who commit evil deeds find time in an earthly Hell devised by two ethereal beings. Needless to say, it provides Shirley a unique podium for commenting on humanity's frailities. Shirley's latest is a limited edition book deserving of a wide readership.

1.0 out of 5 stars Thoroughly Disappointing, May 29, 2003

This review is from: The View from Hell (Hardcover)
I suppose this book could be construed as some sort of commentary on human depravity but to me, the whole thing read like a bad Twilight Zone script. Thoroughly disappointing considering the wonderful stories in Heatseeker. Extradimensional being f**ks with some humans for kicks. The end. There. I just saved you the trouble of reading the book.
