SMOOOOOOOOOOOOOTH!! Don't like the vocals, November 29, 2011
This review is from: The View From Here (Audio CD)
I haven't heard much of Tom Grant before and found this CD while going through some stuff and decided to play it. I remember buying it because Chad Wackerman was on it and it was cheap. It is Smoooooooooth jazz that's for sure. I have problems with these smooth jazz vocals. If you like those kind of vocals, rate the album higher.
The first number is "Night Falls on The Casbah" classic smooth jazz.
Then comes "Dance Walker" good jazz tune, nice beat by Wackerman and real nice piano: some vocals not bad.
"Hang Time" is next: Funky, Paul Jackson Jr. on guitar. Lame George Benson style scat vocals. Nice sax.
"The Next Life": When you have Chad Wackerman why use a drum machine? I hate those things. BAD tune. Skip
"Your Tender Touch": Back to smooth jazz here, nice piano. Reminds me a bit of the Jazz Crusaders.
"Your Look Says it All": UGH: Skip
"Lucky Dog": Paul Jackson Jr. again, nice funky jazz tune. Grant really is an excellent piano player.
"Journey Within": George Benson scat vocal again, like the music though.
"Clear Thoughts": Nice sax, like this tune; good pop jazz.
"Everytime You Go Away": Cover, want not to like it buts its a good cover.
"The Winter Spirits": Very nice, spacey with synth flute and Jim Pepper on sax.
"Some of the Old": Nice keys at the start, vocals are the best on the album, just not my thing.
Summary: I like the jazz and he is a good piano player, Wackerman keeps the music from being elevator, but the vocals just don't do it for me. A light 3 stars, but if you like smooth jazz vocals for the price on here you might like this one.
