Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Few warts emerge in this composite portrait, based on numerous interviews, of the popular First Lady. Photos.

From Library Journal

No Kitty Kelley job here, this is a straightforward biography of the popular First Lady. Although born of upper-middle-class parents, Barbara had a fairly typical youth. At 17, she fell in love with Yalie George Bush; they married while he was on leave during World War II. Life in Texas followed while George made his oil fortune. Tragically, they lost their three-year-old daughter Robin to leukemia during these years; Barbara's hair turned white as a result. Political campaigns came next, culminating in a Senate seat for George. Next, New York, China, and, finally, the years as Second and then First Lady, with Barbara's concern for literacy her top priority. Throughout, her honesty and humor come across, making this a nice addition to all popular biography collections. Previewed in Prepub Alert, LJ 3/1/92, and in "On the Campaign Book Trail," LJ 3/15/92, p. 110-12.
