Review

A MUST READ for budding work-at-home entrepreneurs. Well worth the cost in the first chapter alone! -- Amy Stavis, Publisher/Editor of Tableware Today

Do not be fooled. This one should be read, and reread, both for a home-based business or telework arrangement. -- Training Magazine, July, 2001

Szerman's straightforward approach will make you think seriously and help you plan for success before making the leap. -- Michele Marrinan, Former Editor of Home Worker Magazine

About the Author

When Millie Szerman appeared on the front cover of Money Magazine wearing nothing but a bubble bath, a red telephone and a smile, the business world sat up and took notice. Szerman, who has been running her public relations and marketing consulting firm, New Directions, from her home for more than a decade, was enthusiastically celebrated in that issue as one of the most successful home-based businesses in the country. The article demonstrated how having the freedom to take a business call in the tub is (or can be) a reality for scores of home workers.

Since that time, Szerman has been inundated with inquiries -from telephone calls, Internet e-mails, and letters. She has appeared on numerous television talk shows, conducted hundreds of radio, magazine and newspaper interviews, including the Wall Street Journal, Home Office Computing, Good Morning, Utah, Fox Live (Chicago), Good Day, Atlanta, and Woman to Woman (Los Angeles).

Szerman's work and personal experience has led her to where she is today: a highly successful entrepreneur who has the knowledge and expertise to lead others down their own road of success!

More About the Author

When Millie Szerman (pronounced Sherman) appeared on the cover of Money Magazine wearing nothing but a bubble bath, a red telephone and a smile, the business world sat up and took notice. As president of her own home-based public relations and marketing firm since 1988, Szerman was enthusiastically celebrated in Money's March '96 issue as one of America's most successful home-based entrepreneurs. Whether you're thinking about working from home, your company has already made that decision for you, or you're already operating at home, you'll want to attend this evening's presentation

Although Millie worked for both family-owned businesses and Fortune 500-type employers for more time than she'd care to admit, her search for that perfect employer was never-ending. Five years was the longest she'd ever worked in a single position, but a twist of fate forced her to do her own thing in 1988, and she's never looked back.

Seeking gainful employment is (or should be) a full-time job, and you're likely already doing that from home. Or perhaps, you've wondered what it might be like to start your own business, earning an income from the comfort of that extra bedroom! Your timing couldn't be better. . .nearly 32 million Americans do something from home that generates income. Even President Bush works from his home office!

Millie's Money Magazine bubble bath debut represents a lifestyle sought by thousands of Americans. Based on the popularity of that issue, Millie authored A View From The Tub: An Inspiring and Practical Guide to Working From Home, which was featured on the Oprah Winfrey Show in June, this year. As a highly successful entrepreneur who has the knowledge and experience to lead others down their own road to success, be it other- or self-employed, she will cover topics that are sure to increase your rate of success.

My favorite element to this book is that it's short and sweet.

Whether you have a new home-based business or an established one, this well-written book will give you solid information from whether or not you have the correct personality to run a home-based business through how to deal with your business' success and how to handle it, and everything in between. Ms. Szerman offers concrete and useable advice for those who want to own their own home-based business. I recommend this book very highly.

As a writer working from home, I found Millie Szerman's guide book on how to work out of one's home full of how-tos and what-ifs that gave even an old hack like me a few new ideas about how to organize, how to maintain my sanity.
A View from the Tub would be equally useful for someone who is considering starting a home-based business.
I appreciated the chapter on "how to tune up your one-man band." The poet in me loved the "eating an elephant" metaphor as a way to multitask. The way the author addresses "the loneliness factor" was especially useful for someone who had convinced herself that she loves working without a soul in the room.
What it all adds up to is that this author/publicist has not just researched the subject but has lived it.

A View From the Tub includes a checklist, case studies, a resource section, a place to take notes and quotes from the likes of Ben Franklin and Ann Landers. It is a great book for "home study"-sorry I just couldn't resist the pun.
Carolyn Howard-Johnson, Author of "This is the Place"

From [...] on the Oprah Winfrey Show June 26, 2002: Anyone contemplating working from home should proceed with eyes wide open. No other book on the shelf opens your eyes as wide as A View From The Tub!! This book likely will produce one of two positive results: Either it will get you started on the right foot or it will persuade you that working from home is not your cup of tea. The first result will make you money. The second will save you money!

This book hits its target---it's a 9-Millie-meter gun! Szerman's work not only provides the nitty-gritty of what it takes to do what she's done but also discusses the necessary persona of the home based-warrior.

In my recent attempt to launch a freelance writing career, I read this book and found it to be useful in two ways. First, it forced me to get organized, especially in terms of understanding my strengths and weaknesses as a future telecommuter. Second, it's been inspirational in that the many anecdotes have helped me to realize what's crucial for my business' success. My favorite element to this book is that it's short and sweet. Szerman gets right to the point and doesn't waste your time. However, she's got enough meaninful tips, exercises and information packed inside this guide to keep the serious entrepreneur very busy. Thanks for the great advice!
