Book Description

September 8, 1988
Orrin Keepnews has a rare double perspective on jazz. He has been writing about this music for four decades, and for almost that long he has been one of its most active and highly regarded record producers. He has won three Grammy Awards (one as producer, and two for album notes), was founder of two legendary jazz labels of the '50s and '60s (Riverside and Milestone), was managing editor of The Record Changer magazine, and has written countless album notes as well as articles for Down Beat, Saturday Review, and Keyboard. He has worked in the studio with and written about such jazz giants as McCoy Tyner, Cannonball Adderley, Bill Evans, and Thelonious Monk.
Chronicling this double life, The View from Within brings together a wide range of writings, including early interviews and commentary for The Record Changer; biographical sketches of Jelly Roll Morton, Art Tatum, and Charlie Parker; album notes, essays, and booklets (including the two Grammy winners); and discerning appreciations of such artists as Bill Evans, Wes Montgomery, and Johnny Griffin. Keepnews writes with special warmth about Thelonious Monk, whom he calls "quite possibly the most important artist I have been associated with." There is also a fine tribute to Lenny Bruce (as well as a scathing review of a Bruce biography), and an intriguing chapter entitled "What I Do For A Living," which includes several pieces that tackle the tricky job of describing exactly what a record producer does. Each chapter is preceded by an introductory section establishing its background and context.
What emerges is a vivid portrait of jazz in the years since the war and, equally important, the evolution of a jazz sensibility, tracing the author's transformation from a young jazz traditionalist into an active supporter and indeed one of the leading forces in modern jazz.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

An early co-editor of Record Changer and a leading producer of jazz recordsespecially with Riverside during the 1950sbrings together his writings of the past 40 years: interviews with Pee Wee Russell and Joe Sullivan, reviews of celebrity autobiographies and jazz novels, biographies and evaluations of Armstrong, Morton, Parker and Tatum, and "thoughtful pieces" on jazz writing. There is also a section on what a record producer actually does to make a living (a basic account of how jazz records are planned and achieved), and two defenses of Lenny Bruce. Here, too, are comprehensive surveys, revised from liner notes, of the work of major jazz musicians with whom Keepnews was associated: Cannonball and Nat Ad derley, Bill Evans, Johnny Griffin, Thelonious Monk, Wes Montgomery, Sonny Rollins and McCoy Tyner. An outstanding collection.

From Library Journal

Jazz producer, writer, and former co-owner of the seminal jazz label, Riverside Records, Keepnews here gathers the record and book reviews, jazz criticism, and liner notes he has published in the last four decades. The writings offer his recollections and opinions of many jazz giantsCannonball Adderly, Charlie Parker, Jelly Roll Morton, Art Tatum, Billie Holiday and, most notably, Thelonious Monkand include a section on Lenny Bruce and a previously unpublished essay on the perils of jazz criticism. Though familiar to most jazz enthusiasts, the material will provide general readers with many penetrating insights into jazz history. Jazz fans must still wait for a more comprehensive book about Keepnew's interesting and important career. David Szatmary, Univ. of Washington, Seattle

Orrin Keepnews is a genius jazz music producer who has brought the world so much great music. His stories, collected over the years for this book, are very informative and colorful. This book is a must read for anyone interested in jazz. Orrin is a great story teller and has woven a wonderful fabric of tales from his extensive experiences as founder and producer of Riverside Records in the 50s and 60s.

A super book written by a man who was there and instrumental in many of my favorite arrangements. A must read for those interested in early jazz labels.
