Book Description

Eland Classics September 1986
Includes the piece of journalism Norman was most proud of, an article on the devastation of Amerindian populations in Brazil, which resulted in the establishment of Survival International, which campaigns to protect tribal people and their environments. Travel writing that makes you laugh, but also brings home the world's hurt in glorious understatement.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Here are 20 of Lewis' pieces of travel writing spanning 30 years; two have never previously been published. His journeys include trips to Guatemala, Belize, Laos, and Spain--where he attended a bullfight and reflects on Ernest Hemingway's classic Death in the Afternoon. Lewis recounts riding the Rangoon Express ("the train is unique in never reaching its destination") and visiting Liberia, Goa on the southwest coast of India ("an alcoholic oasis in a largely dry subcontinent"), Ghana, and Naples. In Cuba he encounters Herman Marks, the American who became an executioner for Castro, and he reports on the genocide of Brazilian Indians. The author describes the city of La Paz, Bolivia, the highest capital in the world, and Seville, Spain, with its magnificent cathedral. George Cohen
