Product Description

Color: 2CH Digital Audio to Analog Audio Converter | VHD-D2AC

This ViewHD VHD-D2AC is the Newest & BEST PCM 2CH digital to analog audio converter on the market, here is why:

1) Support sampling rate up to 192KHz. Most products, use older / cheaper chips, can only support sampling rate up to 96KHz, they degrade audio quality.
2) Support RCA L/R output to audio receiver / speaker and 3.5mm output to headphone AT THE SAME TIME with uncompromised performance. Most products don't have this feature.
3) It doesn't have the notorious hissing sound or static noise problem experienced in other similar products, while digital audio input is idle!
4) Use the newest chipset (CS8416 & CS4344) from Cirrus Logic (audio chip supplier to Apple). Now, you can have the best product in this category for your application!

* Size: 55x72x20 mm
* Note: this product is not an audio decoder. It does not decode dolby or DTS multi-channel audio. It converts 2CH PCM digital audio to 2CH analog audio. For example, if you get "da..da..da.." sound, it means the input audio format is not supported. Make sure your audio source send stereo sound.
* If you are looking for a Dolby Digital 5.1CH to 2CH Analog Audio Decoder, please check the "VHD-ADAC" or "VHD-AD3X1" unit.
* If you need to extract stereo to L/R or Dolby Digital 5.1CH or DTS 5.1CH from HDMI to SPDIF, please check the VHD-H2HSAs unit.

* Serviced by J&R Galaxies 30 day no restocking fee return policy and ViewHD one year warranty.

This review is for: ViewHD SPDIF / TOSLINK Optical Digital Audio 4X2 True Matrix with Remote Control | VHD-SM4X2

I didn't even know such a device existed. With the next-gen consoles out, I had a dilemma. My soundbar only has 2 optical inputs. I had my Xbox360 in one and the PS3 in the other. Now with the PS4 and XboxOne, I needed 2 more. I could pull the plugs each time, but that would be a hassle. After some searching online, saw plenty of cheap solutions with so-so results, then came to find this little gem. 4 inputs! Perfect! Never heard of this brand, but the reviews gave me some comfort.

Soon as I got it, plugged all 4 systems into the 4 inputs, then one Toslink cable to go into my soundbar, done.
All I have to do now is turn on the switch, select the input and I'm getting DD/DTS goodness.
Best of all, I now have one free input in the soundbar.

This review is for the 4x2 Matrix switch. I use this box to connect my Panasonic Viera TV, DirectTV set top box, and Oppo BluRay player to my Sonos Soundbar and Sub. This box is critical for that setup because the Playbar has only one input, and it's optical. The other reason this box is needed is because although the TV has an optical output, the TV downgrades multichannel program material to stereo on the optical output. The Matrix allows routing the multi-channel audio from the input source directly to the Playbar, bypassing the TV.

Pros
1. Small and relatively inexpensive.
2. Performs a needed function that's hard to find on any other device in that size and price range
3. Can be controlled via IR with with Roomie Remote

Problems
1. The IR receive window seems to have a narrow field of view, so I had difficulty controlling the matrix from across the room with an IR blaster. None of my other components have this difficulty. It looks like the IR receiver is very small and slightly recessed into the front panel. A larger flush-mourned IR receiver would probably work much better.
2. The Playbar has a feature where it will stop playing music via the network input and switch to the optical input as soon as it senses data on the optical input. This is intended to make it more convenient to transition from listening to music to watching TV. The problem here is that when I connect my DirecTV set top box to an input on the Matrix, the Sonos player detects data on the matrix output even when the DirecTV box is off. So, to reliably use the Playbar as a Sonos music player, I must turn off the Matrix, which is annoying.

The switch is very easy to set up and control. It is compatible with my Logitech Harmony remote so I don't use the remote that came with it. I use it to control two wireless headsets that use Toslink hookups. The only complaint I have is that the led indicator lights are way too bright. It would nice if the brightness could be reduced by two thirds.

I never would have found this without Amazon, I looked around at other places and nobody had something with this function for anywhere near this price. If you shop at a broadcast supply store you could easily pay $600 up for the function this little box supplies. This unit receives signals from four inputs and lets you independently assign them to the two output sockets with zero distortion or detectable jitter.

Physical Description: The box itself is about the size of a 100mm pack of cigarettes. It has an on-off switch and it has two other selector buttons, one for each of the two outputs. On the rear are the six Toslink sockets, they're the nice ones with the little self closing doors to keep dust out. The sockets all worked perfect with a variety of fibre optic cables I tried (Hosa, and others from Amazon), they neither gripped too tight or loose and they functioned flawlessly.

We broadcast live music concerts on the internet every week, one of the outputs from this little box feeds directly to our broadcast rack before it heads out on the internet for everyone to hear. Our chief engineer tested this box with a Neutrik test set and evaluated the sound on our HD-1 Meyer Studio Monitors, no degradation, this thing just passes signals and does it very well. So far we've had zero problems and it's solved many for us.

Our engineer experimented with several other units and found one other "active" optical splitter that works well but the price was not a lot less for that one and the "matrix" of inputs and outputs on this splitter has saved us more than once when we needed one more optical feed for something special.

I don't usually write product reviews, but this product fit what I needed so well that I had to write one.

Sources from which I needed to get sound:

Panasonic UT50 Smart TV apps
PS4
U-Verse IPTV Box

Sources to which I needed to get sound:

Panasonic sound bar
Turtle Beach Headset

In preparation for the launch of PS4, I wanted to get all of the necessary components together to make everything work as well as possible, and I wanted to add a Turtle Beach headset. The sound bar only has two inputs. Originally I had everything connected via HDMI to the TV, and then ran the optical output from the TV to the Panasonic sound bar; however, the TV's optical output does not pass Dolby Digital from connected HDMI sources. I ended up purchasing the ViewHD Matrix 4x2 switcher. I now run all three audio sources to the switcher, and then I run one output from the switcher to the sound bar, and the second output from the switcher to the headset. I then use my Harmony One remote to do all of the switching for me.

On the Harmony remote I have devices set up for TV (Speakers), PS4 (Speakers), TV Apps, TV (Headset), PS4 (Headset), Bluetooth Audio. The Harmony One remote works perfectly with it.
