I've been searching for a good way to store bare hard drives for a while now. I've bought all the ones available here on Amazon, on eBay & from Newegg.

Just do a search for "hard drive protection/storage case or box"---besides the "Pelican 1170 Carrying Case" and the "SentrySafe 500 FIRE-SAFE Box"...you probably won't find a better HD storage/protection case out there.

The GOOD:

This one seems to be the best Hard Drive protection case designed specifically for hard drives at the moment. Whereas the others seem to be just plain plastic boxes--some have a piece of foam on the top lid--hardly any protection at all, this case is made of durable plasic that reminds of Pelican cases. Altho it's nowhere near the quality of Pelican cases, it blows away the others that you can find here on Amazon or even eBay. What sets it apart is the soft anti-static, shock-absorbing foam lining of the actual plastic cases. It also has groves on the top & bottom, so u can easily stack them.

The BAD:

Like the rest of the other cases, this one is not waterproof or airtight. Altho the case snaps close snugly, the top & bottom corners of the case aren't flush--meaning there are small gaps. This case would be perfect if they made 2 extra snap closures on the top & bottom of the case, then it would be a flush closure. It's not too bad because there is actually a plastic protrusion on the inside of the top lid--so the hard drive isn't exposed despite the small gaps. Also, it's "Made in China"---but what isn't made in China these days?

Despite it's flaws, there is nothing out there atm better than this case in terms of quality & protection.

4/5 stars because of the gaps.

If there is a better one that I'm not aware of, pls PM me. Thanx.

The plastic "hinge" is half torn after only a single use, and will no doubt fully tear soon. This looked like the best case out there, but maybe one of the cheaper looking all-plastic cases will at least hold up for some time, even if they don't provide as much protection as this one would if it didn't fall apart so quickly. The problem seems to be that the hinge doesn't have any moving parts, and the plastic is stressed by opening and closing the case and can quickly break as a result.

Audio\Video Techie is right, this is the best case available in this price range. It holds my drives snugly without moving around, even though the storage tray is slightly longer than the drive. The outside case is a sturdy PVC (or similar) material that won't easily ding. I think the inner material is neoprene. The logo embossed into the neoprene helps hold the drive in place while accommodating slight differences in drive dimensions. Both should stand up to a lot of use. I feel say throwing this in a backpack and hauling it around. I wouldn't have picked a yellow case given the choice, but good protection is a lot more important than aesthetics.

Used it for a 2TB 3.5in WD Red HD. It is too tight - have to force the clip to snap shut - and then the top & bottom sides of the case have gaps (open to air). With this pressure, the side hinge will probably break. It is also 'long' for the drive. A couple of extra mm deeper inside rather than the extra length would probably make the drive fit well. I was thinking of getting more but not anymore after trying this out.

I bought this item for long term storage of 2 hard drives. The quality appears to be there, except the hinge does look susceptible to breaking if it put to repeated use.
Mine will not see that type of use, so these are great and compact.

J&R Glaaxies just sent me a nice email asking for a review of their Hard Drive protection box. Normally I don't bother with product reviews but as the follow up came after the thing fell apart on me then I thought other customers would like to know.

That's right, the spine on one box broke on the fourth opening, split down the middle and now I have two separate halves. The cases are made out of the wrong type of plastic (which is too tensile and does not have enough flexibility). I bought four cases and I have not dared open the others as I know they will shortly break too.

Save your money and go with neoprene zip cases.

Just recieved one of them today. Padding on interior is nice BUT hinge was split right out of the wrapping and will most likely fail shortly. Either the manufacturing or design is the problem here as the plastic could be brittle or too thin perrhaps. Any way I would not recommend these for purchase.

Initially, I chose this case instead of other cases that resemble old VHS cassette cases because this case has rounded corners and padded lining. The padded inner lining is great although it slightly adds to the thickness of the whole case. The rounder corners don't dig into the bag if you carry this case in a bag. Opening the case takes a slight bit of minimal effort, because you have to dig your fingers (not nails) under the front flap and apply a gentle pull to release the flap from the lower part of the case. One major problem, though, is that the hinge is weak. The hinge is a molded part of the case, and the hinge part is thinner so it folds. Makes me wonder how many opens & closes will it take before the hinge fails, and the top and the bottom parts detach. Go look at the hinge of an XBox video game case. What's worse is that the long thin hinge protrudes 1/8 inch from the side of the case. The two ends of the hinge is a sharp right-angle corner, so it will dig into the inner lining of a bag if you carry it in a bag. If the sharp corners come in contact with a hard surface with some force, the hinge ends would bend/break. The rounded corners are good, but the sharp corners of the hinge are bad.
