Its display is not really straight
on January 18, 2012
I use this to replace one of my older projector which died on me. It is nice in many ways for its cost is low ($349 free shipping by Amazon), and output is relatively sharp. However, its projected image is not square. My projector screen is 100". When I project the picture to this screen, I noticed right hand side is one inch longer than the left. The area being light up by this projector is not square. The key stone adjustment can only adjust vertical direction, not horizontal direction. That is bad, since my ceiling mount was perfect centered, installed already previously.
Another problem is the fan does not keep cooling once powering off. Viewsonic says there is no need for the cooling fan continuously running for few minutes. However, if I turned it off then turn it back on right away, the overheat light will be on for a minute. Thus, do not turn it on and off often, the overheat could kill the components inside the projector.
When I mount this projector to ceiling, there is a big problem exposed: its HDMI input is not very sensitive. HDMI runs fine with short cable of 6ft. But if I ran a 40ft HDMI cable, it does not show anything at all. Many good TV or projector would have HDMI signal amplifier built-in. So that even with 40ft cable, it will still working fine. I can buy a HDMI in line amplifier to boost its signal level. Hoever, most HDMI signal boosters having problem support the TV or projector perfectly.
The image quality is good. Even compared with projector native resolution at 1024x768, this is not bad. Its fan is slightly noiser than Infocus and Vivitek's.
I wish they improve HDMI signal sensitivity, allow both directions keystone adjustment, and allow fan to cool the projector after turned off. Of course, those features may add cost to the projector. If you purchasing it not for ceiling mount, you don't have keystond hozizontal adjustment problem, nor the HDMI cable length problem. This will be a very good value projector. If you want to mount on ceilin, prepare to get a HDMI signal booster, and replace the booster when there are 3D 120Hz/240Hz booster available. You will need to move your ceiling mount point to adjust the horizontal keystone that way.
