From the Author
The rich cultural heritage brought from Asia to California, the mingling of East and West; has been one of the cornerstones of California's artistic heritage. My book focuses on the contributions of the first generations of Chinese, Japanese, and Filipino artists to work in California. Many of these artists brought with them classical Asian art training; but upon arrival in California, and enrollment in art schools and universities, these artists were to learn new Western art techniques. California's artistic heritage is unique because of this early combination of Eastern and Western art styles. Much of the information in my book has come from personal interviews with the artists, or their families. This book includes 64 artist biographies, many with selected exibitions listed; as well as numerous artist quotes about the purpose and meaning of art. There are 65 color illustrations, and all art work dates from 1920 to 1965, the formative years of Asian American art. Color reproductions range from California Scene paintings to abstract expressionism, and from etchings and watercolors to oil paintings.
