First off let me start by saying the VMP71 DOES play MKV files. Based off my own personal experience it plays them very well to. It also DOES Blu-ray ISO and so many more. The one thing I need to mention that I found to be very convenient was that ability to install your own 3.5" SATA HDD. Not only are they cheaper in terms of $$$, but they usually last longer then external hard drives. As for the actual media player I did have a problem getting my computer to recognize it to upload videos, music, pictures, etc onto the internal hard drive. Viewsonic did solve the issue on how to fix it and after I was enjoying the hell out of it. The VMP71 is new so it does have its somewhat issues but with future firmwares (And there will be some because this item just released in August) I have no doubt that this media player will only get better. Amazon listed the item for $83.99 which is a steal. So if your planning on picking one up I highly recommend it. I also purchased a 1TB 3.5" SATA HDD for $60, and they already include the HDMI cable so you don't really need to worry about that. Overall you will be saving more money and I researched on media players for months; literally, and I have to say this does what most media players do if not more. Yes it doesn't have WiFi or YouTube, but it does have weather and Flickr. It also doesn't have the torrent download application like the others but isn't that what your computers for? I purchased an HD media player for the sole purpose of playing media files. And for that it doesn't disappoint what so ever. Viewsonics finally getting it right, and I know it's only going to get better from here.

I ordered this as cheaper than WDTV live (which I already have). It played non HD videos OK. However, HD videos played sporatic and pixelated. When scrolling through a large list of files, it froze on the 50th file and would not respond to controls.

Viewsonic customer service did not know if this behavior was normal. The only help was to power plug remove and reset. That did not change the behavior. Service rep agreed with me that it seems like a firmware issue. The unit came with firmware version 1.0. Rep had no knowledge if a firmware update was going to be provided. He said the vmp75 was being provided with firmware update.

I returned unit for refund.

I was between opinions with this one and the Argosy HV335T. As both looks exactly as the same (just a different brand name, even the remote, connectors and interface are the same) I purchased this one (should have gone for the argosy).
I saw reviews of people installing a 2TB drive in it and claimed it worked fine so I decided to load my spare 1TB WD SATA drive I had with 750GB of media (music, photos, videos) on it.
It worked fine at that time, but the next day while I was listening to some music, the thing restarted and the drive was no longer visible from the menu. So I power-cycled, it but the thing kept power-cycling itself. The red Viewsonic logo will appear and then the screen will go black for a minute or two just to do the same thing all over again. The only way to turn it off is by pulling the power plug as it will go unresponsive to the remote.
Whenever I remove the drive and install it in the PC, windows will say the drive needs to be checked for issues, it will scan the drive and end up finding nothing, but it happens every time I remove the drive from the unit and install it in the PC while trying to find out if the drive died (fortunately not the case) or what is going on with it.
If I connect it to the desktop via USB I can access the drive with no problem, so I know the unit can actually recognize and interact with the drive, it just won't do it while not connected to the pc. I removed the drive and inserted a 160GB one, it worked fine, connected a 500GB WD Elements via USB, it worked fine, used a usb flash drive, it worked fine, reinserted the 1TB drive, it goes crazy.

I purchased the VMP71 from Circuit City a few weeks ago. The base firmware works but upgrading to the Argosy HV335T firmware (currently 2.35) adds more features and allows access to youtube. The ability to add internal drive makes this drive a top choice for home media. It plays a various amount of file types. I received a list of compatible wireless adapters from Viewsonic Support: Alfa Network (AWUS036NEH),
AZIO (AWU101N), EDIMAX (EW-7711UTn), Intellinet 150N Model 524698/524438,
Zonet ZEW2545.

I purchased this product over 3 months ago and have not had any problems with it to date.

When I ordered this I already had a Samsung 1TB 7200 RPM Drive that I was using in my Media PC, So it already had videos on it. I simply took it out of the PC, Slid it in to the VMP71 and everything was good to go. When I want to add more video to it I simply open the unit, take the drive out, connect it to my PC for file transfers and put it all back together when I'm done.

I'm sure some people would think that sounds like alot of trouble but by the time you wait for USB or Network file transfer to finish it's alot faster to just swap the drive in and out.

You can find all the information you ever want to know about this product in the User Guide from Viewsonic's Website Located Here:

Even tho I am satisfied with this product there are still Cons:

1- Occasionally when selecting a video to play, the Audio won't syncronize properly. If you use the rewind button it will start playback over and remain synchronized after that.

2- Doesn't support PDF. It would be nice to see a firmware update for that. Then I could use it for E-Books.
