5.0 out of 5 stars A must-have for contemplative Christians, January 10, 2005

This review is from: The Vigil (Audio CD)
I heard this album in the '80s in college. I wore out the cassette and (sadly) never had it on vinyl. I stumbled across it just the other day, and am delighted to have it back in my house. It's been playing non-stop for a couple of weeks. We have a LOT of music in our house, but our 4 year old daughter is singing these songs already, in a way that she never did with other CDs!

The tunes are beautifully crafted, catchy, and thought-provoking. The perfect mix. The album is an especially good fit for those who have interest in the early church and orthodoxy in the broader sense -- whether Eastern, Roman Catholic or protestant in faith. But is great for anyone who loves beautiful music.

5.0 out of 5 stars My life favorite Christian album, October 16, 2003

I heard Kemper Crabb in the 80s at a small coffeehouse type gathering. Then when I married my wife (who took me to the coffehouse)I discovered this album. It is such a beautiful blend of scripture, song, and creativity. Some songs are just about mirth and joy, others more contemplative (They That Go Down to the Sea in Ships moves me nearly to tears ...) I was glad to find the re-release of the album on CD because we would surely have worn out the LP by know if we had played it as often as we would have liked ... this album is STILL the best.

5.0 out of 5 stars Inspiring and Classic!, September 5, 2004

My search is over! I can finally replace my album! I, too, discovered Kemper Crabb in the 80's while in college in the Midwest. I wore my album out over the years, even before you could no longer find turn tables! My sister sang "Thigpen's Wedding Song" at my wedding 10 years ago and everyone was haunted by the melody and words. This music has classic roots that strike me today as much, if not more than it did 20 years ago. The concept of keeping a vigil over one's soul is even more powerful these days as I parent my two young girls. Every evening to be thankful that we are together and every morning to place the armor of our Lord on before we enter the realm! Keep the Vigil!

5.0 out of 5 stars good enough to buy again!, June 5, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: The Vigil (Audio CD)
I purchased this on cassette tape when it was first released, not knowing what it really was. And fell in love with the music! Moving, haunting, intricate harmonies. It has an aura that takes you back to the middle ages and envelops you in 'mysterium'. I literally wore out the tape a long time ago, and just thought about it recently. Enough to search online for it & purchase it on CD. Worth every penny!

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect Music Blend, May 7, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: The Vigil (Audio CD)
I first discovered Kemper Crabb in the eighties while in college. It is the purest blend of music and song, touching the soul profoundly. Everytime I hear the end of this album I am immediately struck with visions of Christ's return as He breaks open the skies and comes to set up His Kingdom. Powerful stuff.

I found this "album" shortly after it was released and, as the theme of the other comments have been, I quickly wore it out. I have not heard any of the music for over 10 years but still remember it vivdly. This is some of the most profoundly beautiful and unique music I have heard. It remains as some of the most emotionally moving and inspirational music I have ever enjoyed and look forward very much to owning it being inspired by it again.

5.0 out of 5 stars You must add this work to your collection, December 8, 2006

This is one of the most incredible pieces of music I've ever heard. If you notice, no reviewer has given less than 5 stars. If I could give more, I would. I began listening to this in the 80's off an album that belonged to a friend. I made a rough recording with a microphone onto a cassette and listened for years. Then it wore out and broke. I was without this music for over ten years when I found a used CD on ebay. Now it has resurffaced to the delight of many. I hope that people will find this and embrace it's timeless beauty and anointed lyrics/music. It is truly a masterpiece!

I have bought the record and the cd twice. I have the old and new versions - pretty much identical.

GREAT GREAT GREAT - mellow but very beautiful and well done Medieval /J.M. Talbot sound. More interesting than Talbot in my opinion.

5.0 out of 5 stars So glad to have found it again, January 3, 2009
This review is from: The Vigil (Audio CD)
A friend loaned me the vinyl album 20 years ago. I made a cassette recording, then a CD from it. The CD copy went bad and I thought I'd lost this beautiful music forever. I assumed it was out of print. When I found it on Amazon, I ordered 2 more copies for friends. I even made a framed picture of the second verse of the "Vigil". Pay close attention to those words. Christianity acknowledges the divine LIGHT, but almost ignores the holy twin aspect of divine SOUND. Absolutely beautiful!

5.0 out of 5 stars Timeless, October 11, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)

A friend gave me this on cassette in 1982, the year it was released. I played it for 20 years... until I wore out the cassette. I bought the CD in '04. I love this music. It is sweeping, exquisite, inspiring. And dare I confess? I am more Buddhist than Christian, but these songs have never stopped having deep personal meaning for me. In fact, they are more meaningful at this point in my spiritual journey than they were a quarter of a century ago....
