Interstate '76 for Consoles,

Okay, maybe it's not exactly Interstate '76 but it's obviously a spin-off from the game. The game features the same 70's soundtrack, almost the same characters (with some huge introductions), and the same style of car combat. However, they replaced the huge story with more of a traditional car-combat system, which is really fun.
This game is arena/action based, so don't expect to look for hidden blue keys or anything like that. Most of the time, you travel through map after map, annihilating each opponent until you're declared winner. Each character has a different ending, so it's fun to go through all of the characters. There's a good variety of maps in the selection but the kicker is the maps are all pretty good. Maybe one or two won't be to your preference but there's not one that you're going to want to skip, like most maps in todays games. The character selection is pretty good too. Every vehicle has it's own strenth and weakness, just like every other game, but the specials on this game are just incredible. For instance, one of my favorite vehicles is the camper truck with it's bee attack. It's completely silly to think bees could harm a metal 2-ton rolling machine, but hey, it's a video game! The graphics in this game, are pretty good, given they're Nintendo 64 graphics. The one thing that stands out over the PSOne is the extra map, which is sometimes tagged 'Nintendo Land', although it has nothing to do with Nintendo rather than it's a reason to buy it on their system other than the PlayStation. The controls are really easy to use. It's one of the good games that makes the N64 tooth-controller great to use. It really feels like you're driving with one hand on the wheel and one hand on a weapon selector. I'd say if you love car combat, you're going to love this game. It's really fun and will keep you busy for a good while. You can also pick this up on Xbox Live Arcade as a 800 MS point download. It's fun, but I still think the original is a bit better, mainly because it has more features.

This game is probably the best car-arena-fighting game next to Destruction Derby 64. This game is amazing, but since the graphics are 64ish, it is to me hard to see whats going on at times... but for a 64 game, this game should be an auto buy for someone who can find it.

Good as a one-player game, better with multiple players,

Overall this is a fun game -- different characters and cars that can get different weapons to shoot up other vehicles and/or buildings. The environment looks good, the controls are fairly easy to master, and the music is fun.
Winning the various single-player missions allows you to unlock some new characters and environments, BUT once you have the hang of the game, you can beat the single-player missions fairly quickly. The other single-player modes, Arcade and Survival, may also give you some enjoyment, but overall you can finish this quickly, and might even get a little bored with it after a few days -- if ALL you do is single-player stuff. It is LOADS of fun as a 2 or more person game, though. I tend to enjoy 'social gaming' more anyway -- games like "Super Smash Brothers", "Goldeneye", and "Gauntlet" are a lot of fun when you are playing with (or against!) other players. This is a VERY good game for that kind of group activity, and will add to the "replay" value of this game.

First car combat game on Nintendo 64, "Vigilante 8" makes you feel like your in 1979's "Mad Max" because all of the machine guns and car bashing action. There are 13 characters, but some are hidden, which you can unlock by completing quests with non hidden characters. The levels are creative and dazzling, like the frontier town which makes you feel like you're in a western movie. The game is a little too easy, but all in all,it's a great game.

This is a really fun shooter. You ride around, picking up weapons and then fire the weapons at the other cars, trucks or buses. In one player mode, you can be the Vilagantes and protect buildings,or be the Cyotes and destroy those buildings. You must destroy your enemies in the process.I like this game and it's one of the best shooters I've ever played.

Cars with big guns. Yipee!,

Vigilante 8 may have a sappy storyline, but that can easily be over-looked. The game pins you in a [generally goofy] car and makes you perform special "missions" across very different landscapes. Landscapes vary from farmyards to air force bases to dams, and objectives include protecting and destroying buildings and other cars. It sounds simple (and it is), but imagine driving a big, mean school bus through a fence with a huge machine gun strapped to the back. Yes, with the aide of devastating and effective weapons, there is plenty to hoot about. But like all good things, this kind of novelty will wear off. And since the missions are easily skimmed through in a matter of two days, not much is left for yourself. So what saves this game from being ignored on retail shelves? It has a two-player co-op mode! Not only that, but it's a fun two-player co-op mode! You can go through the entire single-player quest with a friend now. And if that isn't enough, the four-player deathmatch is great. However.... the framerate will suffer and the deathmatches do not offer a whole lot of customization. In the end, Vigilante 8 is a great party game when in the mood for vehicular combat, only being surpassed by San Francisco Rush 2049. You decide.

This is without a doubt one of my favorite games over the fact it has tons of destruction, crazy levels, crazy cars and characters, and odd weapons. Some attacks include disco ball attacks, bee attacks, rocket launching, gatling gun, laser beams, and more galore. Playing with a friend so you can play co-op or destroy each other is a memorable experience as well. The missions are basically to get yourself to the top and rule over everyone else and be the king of destruction. I can't say how much you should play this game because it's full of fun and destruction.

I picked this game up 'cause when I was playing Destruction Derby I thought it needed guns, so this game was recommended.
Overall, after the reviews here have said it's so good, i guess i got my expectations up too high and was let down when I started playing. First off tho, some reviewers said the graphics where no good. The graphics are great. What you need to do is have an expansion pack in the 64. And then during game-play, press start to enter your paused menu, then turn the resolution to high, and it will change from the almost 2Dish graphics to proper 3D graphics, Or, even more recommended by me, go to the password screen and enter "Max_Resolution" as the code. Press OK and then follow the same steps as before, but you'll get an option after "High-Res" that says "MAX" and the graphics are suburb for a 64 game! I don't know why they would put that option in the start menu after a code input tho, it should just be on the main screen options, so many people have probably missed it. (note: I actually had to turn the graphics up higher for some reason when I played with the default graphics, it would freeze on a black screen at the end of the the first race, but it worked fine when they where turned up!) So there are areas/stages you drive through collecting different icons with guns, rockets, bombs etc... however it is annoying that there are secret moves. For instance, you press up, up, down, Z with one kind of power-up thing and you do a secret heat-seeker missile or something... I dunno why they made it like that because... A) the booklet doesn't reveal the hidden moves or finishing esk moves. Nor do they tell you how to do it during gameplay (start menu option) B) using the arrow pad to execute the moves means you have to stop steering with the analog stick to execute it. C) the moves button sequences like that are for fighting games Capcom and Acclaim make, not for a game where its unnecessary. Like I said, I got too excited over it and it wasn't as good as I thought it would be. it's probably better on 2 player, but half the time I don't know what i'm collecting, the thing should say what it is you pick up in writing to know which of the coded moves it is. Check into various websites for codes, there is plenty of codes for invincibility and more tracks, cars, and even a space ship to fly (but it doesn't fly up or down, it guides itself, you just choose left or right which is a bummer, guess i'm too used to Rouge Squadrons controls) The game needs a different style of course too, I dunno what, but open areas all the time gets pretty boring. The games ok, but it's not as good as some hype it up to be. It's not better then any other car game, it's just different. It needed some turbo or nitro boosts in it. There is an after burner but it's coded, but it needed to be a one button press, not a 5 button combination coded move. |
