"The King of Serials...VCI Entertainment ~ The Vigilantes Are Coming (1936)",
This review is from: Vigilantes Are Coming [VHS] (VHS Tape)
VCI Entertainment and Republic Pictures present..."The Vigilantes Are Coming" (1936) (Dolby digitally remastered), a 12 Chapter cliffhanger from an action packed Republic serial featuring an outstanding cast with Mack V. Wright and Ray Taylor at the helm....story line is in 1844, California in the last days of the Dons...it's carefree people dancing under the summer sun...and who is the masked hero they call "The Eagle" (Robert Livingston)....will he lead the ranchers of California against the Russian Cossacks who are planning to turn the territory into Russian colonies, does this mean we will become under the rule of Russia...can the evil General Burr (Fred Kohler), Russian Count Raspinoff (Robert Warwick) along with his henchman Yakima Canutt, Bob Kortman, John Merton and Bud Osborne who always follow dastardly instructions succeed in taking over California...what part does Salvation (Guinn "Big Boy" Williams), Whipsaw (Raymond Hatton), the Vigilantes and Doris Colton (Kay Hughes) play in this adventure during the early days of the west where there was treachery at every turn...some hard riding and outstanding stuntwork by the entire Republic stunt people, making Bob Livingston look good in every episode....don't leave the theater until the final chapter is over and done with "Fremont Takes Command"....just remember double thrills, chills, mystery and suspense...hitting the bull's eye with excitement...don't miss a single spine thrilling episode..return next week to this local theater for another episode of action and adventure that will keep you thrilled until the next chapter.Under director's Mack V. Wright and Ray Taylor, producer Nat Levine, supervised by J. I liked this serial. Lots of action and better acting than in a lot of those old serials. This is a very simple DVD without any extras. For some odd reason, I couldn't "rewind" when I missed a scene. Sounds quality good. Picture quality on one episode was bad, but the rest were good considering that this serial was from the mid 1930s.

... on a decent quality DVD presentation. Don't get me wrong, this is a great value for any black and white western fan. Since this serial is public domain, you can't expect perfect DVD quality.

RIDE WITH THE EAGLE!,
This review is from: The Vigilantes Are Coming: Serial (DVD)
Outstanding early Republic serial! This one has it all: thrills, spills and action! action! ACTION!Robert Livingston stars as Don Loring/The Eagle, a masked avenger out for revenge against those who murdered his family who also happen to be linked with a band of Russian cossacks?!? out to conquer California in the 1840's. Loring returns from Fremont's expedition along with sidekicks Salvation(Guinn BIG BOY Williams) and Whipsaw(Raymond Hatton) just in time to thwart Jason (Fred Kohler) Burr's Napoleonic vision of absolute dictatorship. William Farnum potrays Father Jose who hides the Eagle's true identity and Kay Hughes provides the romantic interest getting kidnapped every now and then. John Merton is Burr's #1 henchman ordering about Bud Osborne and Jack Ingram among other familiar faces to the also familiar strains of Franz Liszt's Les Preludes. It doesn't get much better than this! The Alpha dvd is wonderful! Just as good as my Republic vhs and we all know what wonderful video tape releases Republic put out in the 1990's! So if you're looking for an excellent dvd of an outstanding serial than this is the one you want! And the bargain price seals the deal! Buy and enjoy!

This film is known in Uruguay with the title "Los vigilant ley". I must say that this pelicula remembers to the personage of "El Zorro", since the action is developed in California and the personage also covers itself with a mask although "El is called here águila".Esta film that respects the very particular codes of the serial, it has very interesting moments. The moments of action and the inverosimil stand out that a representative of the Czar of Russia wanted to transform to California into a Russian colony. I believe that filamda is enough good to be a film of year 1936 and little budget. In definitiva:un serial worthy as all those of the Republic seal
