Book Description

April 4, 2003

Love can lift you to the heights of passion or lead you to the depths of hell. Bram Stoker award winner John Everson's second fiction collection offers 15 dark fantasy and horror tales of dark desire:

CALLING OF THE MOON - She answered the calling of the moon. But not before he felt its touch.

LOVESONG - She lured him into the arms of alternative music. He lured her to face the room at the top of the stairs.

A TIME FOR MUSIC - A fairy flute can make dangerous music.

TRICK AND TREAT - All he wanted was a little company for the holiday.

AFTER THE FIFTH STEP - Sometimes, walking the tightrope isn't just a balancing act.

SEVEN DEADLY SEEDS - Bellinda liked to plant things. And Penelope was happy to give her the seeds.

PRESERVE - I don't kill, I preserve, the taxidermist said. But Richard wanted to die.

HARD HEART - Sometimes, wearing a heart on your sleeve can be tough. But giving it away can be even worse.

FROST - When David left the plane to live with the frost sprite, he thought his problems were over.

ANNE'S PERFECT SMILE - She'd disappeared without a trace. And then he found the post-it note.

A LACK OF SIGNS - If you really know what you want, sometimes, you can find it.

CHRISTMAS, THE HARD WAY - There's a reason for every tradition, even if you have magic.

THE HUMANE WAY - Christmas dinner can lead to unsavory philosophical debates.

THE RIGHT INSTRUMENT - Jack's career as a jingle writer was on the deep skids after his breakup. But Eddie knew, all he needed was the right instrument.

VIGILANTES OF LOVE - They came in silence from the swamps by the light of the full moon. They left only bloodstains on the sheets. Ribaud knew that it would take a voodoo queen to reverse the curse.

Editorial Reviews

Review

A collection of fifteen well written stories that range from fantasy to horror....All of them are worth reading. -- Jimmy Z, FeoAmante.com

Each of [Everson's] stories is a dark and tantalizing show well worth the price of admission -- Ray Wallace, Twilight Showcase e-zine

Everson has a clear and sometimes poetic style that lulls and enthralls, drawing you in...only to snap you up. --Michele Patterson, Painted Rock e-zine

From the opening story, Everson proves himself capable of horror, both understated and overt, and of capturing readers' imaginations with his compelling characters and unique twists on familiar themes. Each story is strengthened by vivid descriptions, but it is his ability to create characters with whom readers can identify that makes them all the more powerful. Included in this collection are not only ghosts and supernatural monsters, but also fiends of the human variety, victims of their own desires, and what comes across as a fable or two --Scott A. Johnson, The Horror Channel

About the Author

John Everson has published dozens of short stories over the past 20 years, in anthologies like Best New Zombie Tales, Vol. II, Decadence II, Tourniquet Heart, TransVersions and Freaks, Geeks & Sideshow Floozies. His fiction has also appeared in a variety of magazines.

In October of 2000, many of his horror tales were collected and published in hardcover by Delirium Books as Cage of Bones and Other Deadly Obsessions. Vigilantes of Love followed three years later. His more recent fiction collections include Needles & Sins, Creeptych and Deadly Nightlusts.

Since the original publication of Vigilantes of Love, Everson has published four novels through mass market paperback publisher Leisure Books - Covenant, Sacrifice, The 13th and Siren. His first novel, Covenant, won a Bram Stoker Award upon its original limited edition release through Delirium Books in 2004. Everson is the co-founder of Dark Arts Books and for 20 years served as the pop music critic for suburban Chicago's The Star Newspapers. Though it has been a decade since he last appeared on stage with a band, he remains a closet composer and recorder of pop songs. His instrumental compositions for Lone Wolf Publications can be heard on the Bloodtype and Carnival CD-ROMs. His music also appeared in the 2003 Chicago production of Martin Mundt's play The Jackie Sexknife Show.

Despite an omnipresent nagging dream of relocating to warmer climes, John still lives in the west 'burbs of Chicago with his wife Geri, his son Shaun, and an assortment of birds, fish and a petulant iguana. Find out more about his fiction, art and music at johneverson.com.

More About the Author

I share a deep purple den in Naperville, Illinois with a cockatoo and cockatiel, a disparate collection of fake skulls, twisted skeletal fairies, Alan Clark illustrations and a large stuffed Eeyore. There's also a mounted Chinese fowling spider named Stoker, an ever-growing shelf of custom mix CDs and an acoustic guitar that I can't really play but that my son likes to hear me beat on anyway. Sometimes my wife is surprised to find me shuffling through more public areas of the house, but it's usually only to brew another cup of coffee. In order to avoid the onerous task of writing, I occasionally record pop-rock songs in a hidden home studio, experiment with the insatiable culinary joys of the jalapeno, design book covers for a variety of small presses, lose hours in expanding an array of gardens and chase frequent excursions into the bizarre visual headspace of '70s euro-horror DVDs with a shot of Makers Mark and a tall glass of Newcastle.

5.0 out of 5 stars A book full of surprises, scares, and pure reading enjoyment., April 14, 2011
"Vigilantes of Love" is the kind of book that once you open it, you cannot put it down until you've finished reading it from cover to cover. And I'm not just saying that because I'm a huge John Everson fan. Each story was brilliantly written and complements the story preceding or following it.

John Everson has an uncanny knack of creating characters that not only jump off the printed page, but they can actually slap you if they wanted to. Add to that his brilliant writing style and you have masterpieces of fiction and horror that will keep you pleasantly busy reading more of his work.

I enjoyed all the stories in the collection, but my favorites are "Calling of the Moon" and "Seven Deadly Seeds". I highly recommend it to all other John Everson fans and fans of horror and dark fiction who love stretching the threshold between reality and fantasy.

John Everson is a master of writing tales that involve you emotionally- and then, once he has you spellbound, jolts the living daylights out of you. I feel compelled to warn you this is not selected reading for the timid, squeamish, or those weak at heart. However if you are looking for an intense read assured to rivet your shocked eyes to your kindle, a read which will impact your nightmares for weeks after completing it, this is the book for you.
