The Battle of the Vegetables
Leeks who believe a cow is one of Santa’s reindeer, carrots who accept an invitation to a party given by rabbits, and a leek and carrot couple whose romance precipitates total vegetable warfare are the hapless protagonists in these satiric, snarky stories. Hardcover

For example, the first 2-page spread is entitled "Who were the Vikings?" The main paragraph describes the years they were active, and gives a brief overview of their culture. There's a map of the Viking world. Also photographs a catty brooch, a dragon head from a warship, a chieftan's axe head, Thor's hammer, a sword and a silver Viking face charm. There's also an illustration of the romantic view of Vikings as well as one from an early English manuscript about the Vikings. Plenty of things to see to help with getting a feel for the culture. Each with explanatory notes that you can choose to read or to skip over.
Topics covered with a 2-page spread are: Who were the Vikings, Lords of the sea, A Viking warship, Viking warriors, Weapons, Terrorizing the West, East into Russia, Discovering new lands, A Viking fort, Other ships, Trading east and west, Kings and freemen, Women and children, At home, Mealtime, Animals wild and imagined, Farming, Getting around, In the workshop, Spinning and weaving, Jewelry, Games music and stories, Gods and legends, Viking burials, Runes and picture stones, The Jelling Stone, and The coming of Christianity. Finally, there is an index.
My 9-year-old and 7-year-old enjoyed this book and felt it helped them better understand the Vikings. My 6-year-old didn't necessarily "enjoy" it, but it did help her better understand what she had learned. I would definitely recommend this book to those studying the Vikings.
You could go through 10 museum collections and not find the scope and quality of information contained within this book. Multiple excellent pages on Viking technology, from domestic weaving and home construction, to warfare and armaments and fort construction, to metal working and shipbuilding, to burial goods and horse harnesses -- everything is given plenty of space and allowed to tell its own story, visually. Well-organized, with a good index and plenty of photographs.
You just cannot go wrong with Eyewitness Books.
