Another story that sets an old Harlequin formula, September 27, 2010
There was rather distutding trend in Harlequins in the late 70s/early 80s of men marrying much younger women. The May/December thing was pretty out there, but Harlequin's took it to a whole new level by featuring men who were almost adoptive fathers to the heroines from a very young age, who decided to marry the heroine when she became of age. Heroines in these books(like Violett Winspear's By Love Bewithed)had no posssions(not even the clothes on their backs) that were not given to them by the hero, were kept "innocent" for the guardian's benefit and educated per the specifications of their guardians.
I found these books kind of creepy and wondered if those "romances" manufactored by men who were in complete control of the woman, would have withstood a true test like appearance on the seen a younger man who gave the heroine a choice. I doubted it.
It seems like Wentworth read those same books and came to conclusions similar to my own.
This books features Carly, an orphan who was taken in as an 11 year old and raised by her fahter's former boss(Andrew) and his mother. Andrew unofficially adopted Carly, paying for her schooling, vacations and car. Andrew helped Carly get a flat and gave her a small business loan to start a clothing company. Now that Carly is a beatiful, 21 year old woman, Andrew wants Carly for his wife. Carlym in unending gratitude for everything Andrew had done for her, agreed.
Everyone was happy with the arrangement until Kye Anderson comes to town and Carly's heart moves for the first time.
The was a great, heartfelt romance with well developed characterizaton, real conflict and angst, humor, urgency and the HEA. No silly over used plot devices(secret baby!) needed to maintain the drama and engagement.
I was drawn in from the beginning and could not put it down. Well done Sally Wentworth.
