4.0 out of 5 stars Works Well
I noticed the bad reviews are mostly because of the look of the drive, but none of those reviews mention the usefulness of the drive.

When I purchased my Viking 256mb, it was on severe discount (and at the writing of this review, it's plummeted below $30) and I didn't know if I was going to need a USB flash drive.

I am marking down the drive only...

3.0 out of 5 stars Fast Read, Slow Write
Like the title said, it's read speed meets the usb 2.0 spec. But the write speed is as slow as usb 1.1 spec.

I am marking down the drive only on appearance (kind of clunky), because switching between my PowerBook and home and work Dell PCs is absolutely no problem. I used the drive to carry my university term papers and assignments and had no problems saving data. I also used some space to carry around some MP3s which worked perfectly, no matter what the location.

I ended up with the new iPod Shuffle and handed down this drive to my mom who wonders why she has never considered USB flash. She is supervisor at her department, frequently traveling to off-site meetings and writing tons of reports. She had been using floppies, but her home laptop didn't come with a floppy drive (and after they replaced a bunch of computers in her department, neither did a lot of her employees).

I don't care if you have one file or a thousand. You need to back up, and USB flash is an easy and convenient way to do it. Taking presentations on the road with you is a cinch here, and taking work home with you couldn't be easier.

1.0 out of 5 stars Item does not match picture, December 15, 2004
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Viking USB00256L2 256 MB USB 2.0 Portable Mini Flash Memory Device (Personal Computers)
The item does not match the picture. Instead, the item is a boxy device with an octagonal shaped plastic outer structure that is smoky ink colored. Not nearly as cool looking as the one in the picture. This one goes back.

3.0 out of 5 stars Can't get Windows 98 driver to work?, December 16, 2004
This review is from: Viking USB00256L2 256 MB USB 2.0 Portable Mini Flash Memory Device (Personal Computers)
Worked great when I tried it on Windows XP and on Windows 2000, with no driver software. But can't get it working on Windows 98. Downloaded driver file "usb2_drive_98.zip" from VikingComponents.com, unzipped into folder, pointed Windows "new hardware found" wizard there, says "did not find" the right driver there. BTW, the .inf file says "Lexar" all over it and is dated Dec. 2002. (Tried a newer driver from Lexar, that didn't work either.)

1.0 out of 5 stars Pillaged by a Viking, December 18, 2004
This review is from: Viking USB00256L2 256 MB USB 2.0 Portable Mini Flash Memory Device (Personal Computers)
I also purchased a 256MB Viking memory stick. It came fast, well packed, but with NO manual/instructions and it certainly didn't even resemble the product illustrated on the website. The technical support I received from Viking was substandard and I also have sent the product back.

I purchased this product the beginning of Decemeber to give as a gift. When it came it was entirely different from what was pictured on the website. I complained and they sent me a replacement and that too was incorrect. The information on the site is incorrect and misleading. Buyer beware.

1.0 out of 5 stars Viking Flash Drive, December 29, 2004
This review is from: Viking USB00256L2 256 MB USB 2.0 Portable Mini Flash Memory Device (Personal Computers)
I am very disappouinted in your offering.

The item which arrived did not look anything like what was depjicted in the ad.

You really should make sure the items match.

Amazon.com should be above any inference of "bait and switch".

Thanks.
