I bought a 36" All Gas Viking Range (mine was with griddle top) in 2004, and have had problems ever since. I invested in a Viking thinking that this would be a quality product that would last. With three growing kids, I do a lot of cooking, and wanted a product that I could depend on. The range was more expensive (over $5,000 when I bought it) than other brands, but I thought it would be worth the investment. I was wrong. The quality of the range has been very disappointing!

When my first range was delivered, the oven would not ignite. The service technician told me that all the igniters in the oven were broken. Not a good sign. Rather than have them fix the problem, I insisted on a new range. This I got, but then a year later, the broiler stopped working and that thermostat had to be replaced. In 2009, the front left burner wouldn't stop clicking even after the burner ignited. The technician had to replace the spark module, and at the same time recommended replacing the two oven igniters as they were slow to come on. This year, the griddle knob stem broke off. I mean give me a break! I cook often, but am not careless, and was infuriated when everyone insisted that the knob probably got "bumped." If you look a the stem, it's not even a solid piece of metal! I had to replace the whole thermostat system. And to make matters worse, when investigating the thermostat problem, I noticed that the griddle had split along its seam and was oozing grease onto the inside of the range!

That was the last straw. I wrote Viking about how disappointed I was with their product and the hundreds of dollars I have had to spend in repairs. At the very least, I wanted them to replace the griddle without charge.

My neighbor has had a 48" Viking dual oven range using propane for about 3 years. He is an excellent cook and technically very savvy. Last weekend he was slow-roasting a brisket when his wife noticed a fire in the oven. Apparently (according to the Viking rep), the gas delivery solenoid had stuck open. After they turned the gas off (they thought) and extinguished the flames and removed the charred brisket, they closed the oven. A bit later he opened the oven door and turned the gas on to see if he could determine what had happened. The resulting fireball trimmed his eyelashes, eyebrows and the hair off one arm and burned his face a bit. Reflecting on it later, he was glad that he had checked the oven, rather than letting the house fill with gas as they slept. The propane smell had been completely overwhelmed by that of the burned brisket. The Viking people were extremely solicitous and the tech who arrived within hours diagnosed the stuck solenoid as though he had seen such before...
This is no apocryphal story; I have seen the charred oven, which is being replaced gratis.

We're architects and routinely specify appliances for new and remodelled kitchens. Among the worst mistakes we've made was to specify an all Viking kitchen - refrigerators, range, dishwasher, and compactor. Every one of these appliances has failed! Our client has now been without a refrigerator for a month, because Viking was out of stock of a part! The dishwasher had to be replaced. The range has required hundreds of dollars of repairs, and still doesn't work properly. Our advice? Avoid all Viking products!

I got this range about 3 months ago and it is absolutely incredible. I completely disagree with the other broad review. I had all Viking appliances in my last home as well and they were fantastic. I highly recommend Viking to anyone who is serious about cooking. The infra-red gas broiler cooks an amazing steak.
