1.0 out of 5 stars Hero needed a brave heroine, July 22, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Viking's Heart (Harlequin Historical, 515) (Paperback)
This novel does not involve Viking raids, Scandinavia or fjords. It takes place in England and the hero, Agravar, is a Viking in the service of his friend Lucien.

Rosamund, the heroine (and I use this term loosely) is abducted on her way to her cousin's castle. Agravar serves as Captain of the guard and rescues Rosamund.

Rosamund is a nervous Nellie frightened of her own shadow. Everyone has to walk on egg shells around her. Her step father is an abusive man and now he has betrothed her to Lord Robert, a man she has never met but she is convinced he is evil; she fears all men. Her plan is to try to escape this marriage.

I am unsure why Agravar takes a shine to Rosamund, she is colorless while he is vibrant, he is brave and she is fearful. He is protective of her. She begins to have feelings for him but is very unsure of herself and feels trapped while at her cousin's keep.

It is only in the last chapter that Rosamund develops a backbone and only because it is forced upon her. I cannot recommend this novel. I guess I just wanted the heroine to fight for herself and her man; instead she was content to let others make decisions for her.

4.0 out of 5 stars A great weekend read, June 27, 2000
This review is from: The Viking's Heart (Harlequin Historical, 515) (Paperback)
In this sequal to "The Maiden and the Warrior," there are several returning characters: Lucien, Alayna, and (now the hero) Agravar. Agravar saves Lady Rosamund from what he believes are kidnappers. She is in route to her betrothed, Robert, a man she has never met, but already knows she won't be able to marry him. Her step father has raised her to believe she is weak mentally, morally, and physically. She believes he killed her mother as well as being a cruel and arrogant man. The story follows Rosamund's realization that all men aren't cruel and she isn't weak. In the process she falls in love with Agravar, though she ends up married to Robert through trickery and threats. The story goes on from there. I enjoyed this light read, only wishing at times that there was more depth and development within the story. I've enjoyed all of Ms Navin's book and this one was no exception!
