The best Hidalgo cd,
By Jose A. Padilla (puerto rico) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Villa Hidalgo (Audio CD)
This is his first and best CD so far. I don't know what happen to Hidalgo with his others CD's. He went to the more trditional Latin Jazz. He does not even do more songos anymore. I'am not saying he is bad musician. I have all his cd's and i think he was the best conguero in the last century, but i think he should go back and do the stuff he did in this CD with his friend from Batacumbele. I would also love to see him doing a latin jazz cd using the music of bomba y plena like William Cepeda did with Afrorican jazz.

Giovanni - the best conguero in the world.
This was the respected conguero's debut solo release from 1992, on Messidor. Features Cachete Maldonado, David Sanchez, and Eric Figueroa. With guests Dizzy Gillespie and Paquito D'Rivera.

Great display of Giovanni's skills, but I like worldwide better,

This CD is well-produced, great musicians (some of the best of Puerto Rico), and Giovanni shows off as he should for his debut solo album. However, I owned Worldwide first and recently bought this to see how good it was. I'm not disappointed...it still has good songs and I love the display of skills by Giovanni and the other musicians. However, I'm very partisan to Worldwide's "Blue Minor, Canadian Sunset, Summertime, Seven Steps to Heaven, and It Don't Mean a Thing"...I happen to think Worldwide's compositions are more interesting and I love those songs.
My favorite song in Villa Hidalgo is Bahia San Juan. It is still worth the purchase to hear Hidalgo's young prowess and skills, but musically, I like Worldwide better. |
