Book Description

March 21, 2002 Tales from Turnham Malpas
The twins are now eleven. Their mother, Caroline, is unable to have children. It was an indiscretion by their father Peter - then the new rector in Turnham Malpas - that led to their birth. Their mother Suzy gave them up for adoption to Peter and Caroline. Peter's affair was one of the hardest things Caroline has ever had to deal with but now the children, who know that Peter is their father, are asking who their mother is. This is not the only problem in the village and of course everyone has a view as to how this and the other things should be handled. Usually it is Peter who calms troubled waters but this time he is at the heart of the problem.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good book, good series, July 28, 2008
This review is from: A Village Dilemma (Hardcover)
Several books earlier in this series of life in an English village, Bryn Fields left Turham Malpas after discovering his wife was cheating on him and almost killing the other man. Now he has a plan to take wealthy American tourists to the village and use its charm to turn a profit. Many of the villagers are unhappy to hear of the impending invasion. Meanwhile, the adopted children of the the village rector and his wife are beginning to ask questions about their birth mother. This puts the parents in an uncomfortable situation, since the babies were not a random adoption, but rather the result of the rector's marital indiscretion from ten years prior.

Quote: "I wonder if she ever thinks of them and what they're doing. It hurts me still thinking about how brave she was, but they are turning out to be terrific people, aren't they?"

This is a very good work in this series. Finally some of the most important issues, which have been brewing since the first installment, must be dealt with. How much do you reveal, how much do you hide, what do you do when your mistake hurts more people than just you? In addition to the struggles of the rector and his wife, the villagers are out in full force, taking sides for and against the tourism project, largely depending on what they have to gain economically from the venture.

4.0 out of 5 stars Rebecca Shaw Turnham Malpas Series, May 18, 2007

I have enjoyed reading the entire Turnham Malpas series in sequence. I have also read Ms. Shaw's other books. All are a delightful not too strenuous read and provide a look at a different place and life in a small English village. I compare these books to Jan Karon's books about a very small town in North Carolina which are also favorites of mine.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very satisfied, September 25, 2010

I haven't read this book yet, as it is part of a series. The stories take place in a small village in England. You have all the regulars, with new characters being added in each book. I have read 4 or 5 in the series so far, and I am enjoying them. If you like British fiction, you will enjoy this series.
