After a traumatic experience doing mission work in Africa during a civil war, Rector Peter Harris, his wife, and their two children return to their home in the English village of Turham Malpas. Peter makes the decision to return to his mission to finish his work, however, leaving his family behind to heal. As time passes, it becomes increasingly clear that the two children have not recovered from their trauma, and that their mother is powerless to help them. There are also problems in the village, including crimes which threaten its stability.

Quote: "I can't go live at the Rectory because Caroline and the twins need their space. The twins you see are still having a very bad time. They're worse at night, I'm told."

This episode in the life of Turham Malpas takes a big step - it is more disturbing than its predecessor's, less fluff. It doesn't make it a bad read, but it is different from many of the novels that came before it.
