3.0 out of 5 stars It would make great party music, but I wouldn't play it before a rock show
The Good

"Grass Roots" mixes acoustic guitars with a bouncing drum beat that helps set the pace for the rapped and melodically blended lyrics. "Mr. Brown Bag" delivers some funk style licks over its southern based rhythms. "Rolling Stone" abandons most of the rap-style vocals for a more country tone.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best CD's I've Ever Bought, February 27, 2010

I genuinely like and enjoy every single song on this CD. I can't even remember how many times I've bought a CD, only to find out that I liked one or two songs, tops; this CD is exceptional in that regard. All the songs are different but have a good feel, you can really bump along to it, and it's all real, real fresh.

You won't regret giving this CD a try.

Just listen to the teaser tracks, Listen to Whiskey about 43 times...if that doesn't make you bounce, I don't want to know you. Buy the album.

4.0 out of 5 stars This Band Rocks!, February 12, 2007

I love the Villebillies cd. I've been playing it over and over. I saw them live several years ago, and they were so exciting. I was thrilled when they finally released a cd. Hope they release another cd soon.

I never listen to this cd just once, it always plays at least twice, it draws me in...I LIke it that much. It's their sound, their words, they have made exceptional music in their own unique style. Their honesty, talent, dedication. loyality......speak to me.....and I'm old enough to be their mother(s)!----

*life is what it is. explicit sometimes. If this cd wasn't so honest it would offend. I will cringe at a movie using the f word repeatedly, but these guys did this cd from the inside out. If you listen, you'll get it.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best I've Ever Heard, September 28, 2006

I've been a fan of the Villebillies for over two years, been to tons of shows and been given previously recorded tracks of theirs, but nothing comes close to what I heard on this CD. All the songs have been mastered just enough to make them sound new and totally fresh. It was definitely worth being 2 hours late to work to be able to get this CD as soon as it went on sale. I just can't say enough positive things about their ability to mix so many different genres of music, like rap, country, bluegrass, and hip-hop, together and still make it sound awesome.

5.0 out of 5 stars These guys are amazing., November 28, 2011

A friend let me borrow this album, and I couldn't stop listening to it. I ended up getting their other two albums, and they are both awesome as well. As with just about any band, there are some songs that are just ok, but most of them are great, and a few are extraordinarily good. I am wishing there were more bands out there that made this kind of music. Any recommendations?

The Bad

This is not a rock album (or anything close to it). Despite their "genre-defying" label, the Villebillies are a rap and hip-hop group that, occasionally borrow from rock-based genres.

The Verdict

Even though this is not a rock release, I am a fan of all music, so I am going to give this one a fair assessment. The Villebillies aren't necessarily breaking new ground with their multi-genre rap and hip hop compositions (you've heard these styles by different artists), but they are one of the few groups that I have heard that offer something different with each song (and have a real band behind them). It would make great party music, but I wouldn't play it before a rock show.
