"Villette" is a thought-provoking novel about plain and practical Lucy Snowe who decides to settle in Villette, France, without any means or family support. The novel cleverly, yet abstractly explores gender repression, unrequited love, isolation and cross-cultural conflict in the protagonist's attempts to adjust in France.

About the Author

In 1846, Charlotte Bront_ and her sisters began publishing under assumed gender-ambiguous pen-names because of "a vague impression that authoresses are liable to be looked on with prejudice." By 1849, all her siblings had died. The now well-known author of Jane Eyre travelled to London and enjoyed the friendship of many writers and intellectuals. In 1854, she married. She and her unborn child died soon thereafter. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.
