Book Description

No Unix-class system administrator or user will get far without
learning the basics of Vim, the modern replacement for vi, widespread visual text-mode editor. Contrary to some misinformed opinions spread among users who are new to Unix-class systems, Vim is not difficult to learn. Granted, it is not very friendly to beginners, but once you grasp the basic concepts, you will never have to learn another text editor again, because Vim is available for all standard operating systems, including Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X, Linux, BSD, and many others. This book helps you shorten the time you need to spend learning Vim.

1.0 out of 5 stars terrible August 17, 2012

Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
In the first two chapters, there were several mistakes (ctrl-R, ctrl-shift-6, :ZZ) and some dangerous advice about how to kill processes.

3.0 out of 5 stars Ok, but not worth the money June 25, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is definitely a very straightforward guide to learning vim for someone without previous experience, don't think it's worth the money when there are free guides on the internet, and vimtutor provides much of the same information. It's also not a long book, it took about 20 minutes to get through.

I would recommend this book if you are looking to be walked through at a very detailed level some basic vim capabilities, but after 20 minutes of reading you'll have all the information you need.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book really hits you in the mouth! January 31, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
I was up early in the morning listening to my favorite podcast when I heard the host mention Jacek Artymiak's vi book. Jacek Artymiak's VI book was a great reference for learning VI and VIM. Too many young Unix/Linux engineers have no clue how to use the VI Editor and this book breaks it down for you. Very well written by a Unix expert who has no agenda but to help you improve your unix skills and further your career. My Netscalers are run on a BSD Kernel and I have had to edit several files and noticed that my VI and VIM skills had eroded over the last few years of GNOME and KDE not to mention Windows. This book has given me the tools I need to have full command of my Netscaler devices and the conf files I need to manipulate on the fly.

So give two to the head to your GUI interfaces and propogate the VI formula and get back to the roots of hard core Unix administration.

Great book Mr. Artymiaks, thanks for the reference.

John
